Thruster service - RM Propulsion BV (original) (raw)

The thrusters on your vessel need overhauling every 5–10 years in order to ensure everything is working correctly and to avoid problems while at sea. For instance, ropes and nets can accidentally damage thrusters, resulting in water ingress or oil leaks. Moreover, any damage to the propellers can also cause internal harm to bearings, gears, or shafts.

Even if no visible damage occurs, over time the aggregation of water in the oil can cause corrosion on bearings and gears. Furthermore, all seals inevitably age, which means their performance will gradually decline.

Five-Year Thruster Overhaul

To begin with, a five-year overhaul includes a full disassembly, thorough inspection, and detailed cleaning in order to accurately assess the condition of the thruster. After that, we proceed to replace key wear parts, such as shaft seals and blade foot O-rings. As a result, your system remains compliant with all relevant classification requirements and, more importantly, continues to operate safely and reliably.

Ten-year thruster overhaul

In addition to the procedures performed during the five-year service, an even more thorough overhaul is required after ten years or approximately 40,000 hours of operation. At this point, the thruster undergoes an extensive inspection process in order to determine whether any key components need to be repaired or replaced.

Consequently, this ensures that your vessel’s thrusters will continue to operate safely and smoothly for years to come. For example, you can expect the renewal of critical components such as blade foot O-rings, shaft seals, bearings, and liners. Altogether, this comprehensive approach extends the lifespan of your thruster system and minimizes the risk of future failures.
