Critics Consensus

Despite Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman's welcome return to rom-com territory, A Family Affair squabbles with its own tonality too much to elevate its litany of clichés.

Jacob Oller AV Club Directed by Richard LaGravenese, every moment in A Family Affair sits there as lifelessly as Gerard Butler’s character in LaGravenese’s most successful movie, P.S. I Love You. Rated: D- Oct 25, 2024 Full Review Peter Rainer FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It makes no emotional sense whatsoever. Jul 13, 2024 Full Review Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) The movie is what it is. It’s not going to blow your mind, change your perspective on life or inspire you to rewatch it. But in the moment? It’s fine. Rated: 2.5/5 Jul 12, 2024 Full Review Nicholas Bell Fish Jelly Films (YouTube) Although it's playing with some offbeat elements, a lack of discernible interiority robs this bizarre rom-com oddity of maintaining our interests or attention. Rated: 2/5 Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Louisa Moore Screen Zealots A mediocre romantic comedy with no depth nor substance, this one screams half-hearted and shallow. Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Emma Vine Loud and Clear Reviews A Family Affair invites viewers into a lavish world and a fantastical romance that one can only dream of. Yet it’s funny, wildly entertaining, and all in good fun. Rated: 3/5 Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Joaquin C Couldn't stop laughing. Zac Efron nails these type of movies. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/16/24 Full Review Paula María P It was creepy. At least Zac is back Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review Nina N If you have no taste in movies, love pointless rom coms that won't even make you feel anything and have two hours to waste, this is your movie. The plot seems and feels forced. Joey King's character gets so upset, it doesn't make sense why. She's behaving like an angry teenager that didn't get her way. Comparing her and Nicole Kidman's acting, Joey acts like a classic Disney star from 10 years ago, at least in this movie. Zac Efron's character is so trivialized that this movie is more like a parody of a serious movie. But the scenes between Nicole and Zack, although completely clichéd and worn out, still show some of their chemistry. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review Chris S Loved this movie! It was very easy to watch and had good pacing throughout. I agree with the other positive reviews especially wrt character development between the three leads. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review Matt H Fun easy to watch romcom. You could tell actors had fun with it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/11/24 Full Review Geovanna A Enredo previsível. Zero química entre o elenco. Protagonista com 24 anos agindo como uma adolescente, cansativo. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/02/24 Full Review Read all reviews
