Critics Consensus

Visually stunning and narratively satisfying, Blade Runner 2049 deepens and expands its predecessor's story while standing as an impressive filmmaking achievement in its own right.

Jonathan Romney Film Comment Magazine If every new film made today is to a greater or lesser degree an echo box of past possibilities, what's notable is how much Villeneuve gives those echoes room to breathe and to be new. Mar 8, 2018 Full Review Melissa Anderson 4Columns In the end, for all its pleasures, it's difficult to view Blade Runner 2049 as anything but an elaborate echo of the original, neither true sequel nor reboot, unclear of its own identity. Oct 30, 2017 Full Review Tim Hayes Sight & Sound The film dares to be ambiguous, but ambiguity is a bad fit with the current critical mood that art must be prescriptive rather than reflective. Oct 17, 2017 Full Review Brittany Patrice Witherspoon Pop Culture Reviews 2049 is able to exist both as a masterful sequel and/or stand-alone film in the universe, which showcases Villeneuve’s massive skill as a storyteller and further validates him as one of the best visionaries of our generation. Rated: 5/5 Jul 11, 2024 Full Review Justin Micallef Vague Visages If the original film’s warmth beneath the cold metropolitan’s structure came from Deckard’s love for Rachel, 2049 extends this ethos to a love and understanding of the self in the greater context of others. Feb 6, 2024 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand Just as in the original, this film is as much about the texture of the world on screen as it is the story of the Replicants 30 years after Deckard first strolled the mean streets of L.A. B T Good follow up to Blade Runner final cut. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/25/23 Full Review L S It OK. Looks stunning but the self indulgence of the deliberately slow pace, with very little reward just left me a bit hollow. The sheer vision of the original is present, but it's no longer enough to sustain a rather empty story. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/25 Full Review aiden s A fantastic beautifully shot and perfectly acted film, however, some parts of it do drags slightly other than that the movie is perfect truly a fantastic sci-fi film with great themes and really makes you think about the current time we live in Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/25 Full Review Tobias K Really stunning pictures with beautiful lighting that brings back the look and feel of the OG Blade Runner Final Cut. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/25 Full Review Anthony M Bloated and unnecessary, one of those sequels that makes one realise how good the original movie was. So, perhaps not a complete waste of my time after all. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/25 Full Review Will B I was a massive fan of the original Blade Runner directed by Ridley Scott. This new iteration had potential, but Harrison Ford seems tired, and the way they wrote Deckard seems out of place. It's like he's a totally different character than the one Ford portrayed in the original. I mean, it's Harrison Ford being grumpy, wearing a t-shirt and jeans, and drinking whiskey. It's not Deckard. In fact, it would have been a better film if they'd left Ford and the character of Deckard out of the story altogether - or only referenced his character as part of historical exposition. Either way, there was a LOT of expectation going into this film, and for me, it just didn't live up to the hype. Would I like to see something new in the Blade Runner universe? Yeah, I'd actually like to see a direct sequel to 2049. And I'd like it to be better. I'm not sure we need Amazon's Prime putting out something that takes place 50 years in the future with 2099.
