Critics Consensus
If Decision to Leave isn't quite on the same level as Park Chan-wook's masterpieces, this romantic thriller is still a remarkable achievement by any other metric.
Christina Newland iNews.co.uk Although this is a story of murder and death, it is also one of tenderness. Rated: 5/5 Sep 18, 2024 Full Review Caryn James BBC.com Park Chan-wook puts a ravishing spin on a timeless story of romantic obsession and a detective who falls for his suspect. Dec 27, 2022 Full Review Scott Tobias The Reveal (Substack) It’s not as immediately gripping as his previous work, but it lingers like perfume. Rated: 4/5 Dec 19, 2022 Full Review Joe George The Progressive While this mingling of crime and romance plots reveals the stern policeman to be a fundamentally fallible person, it also underscores the problems inherent in police work. Rated: 4/5 Jul 20, 2024 Full Review Calum Cooper In Their Own League Director Park weaves many clever motifs and symbolic imagery into his film to heighten the tension and keep up the storm of anxiety as the characters’ clashing duties and wants threaten to finally meet. Rated: 5/5 Jul 15, 2024 Full Review Ross McIndoe The Skinny It’s a tale told in yearning glances and whispered half-truths, one where the words “I did it” and “I love you” always seem to be just out of reach. SNORKLEHEAD This is the kind of movie that only East Asians make these days (at least it seems that way to me). Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Jordan H wanted to love this but didn't buy into the central relationship enough Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/01/23 Full Review Greg O Keeps your attention, well paced, wonderful acting Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/26/22 Full Review Jacob N A haunting BRIEF ENCOUNTER as neo-noir with a gorgeous score and every frame and camera movement exquisitely crafted, performing a magic trick of seamlessly interweaving the past and mental projections of the past into the ever complicating present. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/09/22 Full Review Len great acting with a compelling story that keeps you interested and focused to the story. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/09/22 Full Review PayneReviews After being put on a murder case a detectives life becomes entangled with the live of his suspect resulting in disastrous consequences.Complete with gorgeous cinematography and excellent sound design I was truly immersed in the story. I loved the chemistry between Hae-Joon and Seo-rae they click as soon as they get on screen together. Had a similar feeling to Memories of Murder at first but quickly transcended and became its own thing. The murder is expertly crafted keeping the audience on their feet with Hae-Joon as he untangles one lead after another. Throughout the film they use this technique of having Hae-Joon show up in the scene when he's supposed to be watching it as a way to show him piecing things together and it's an extremely interesting way to show his thought process. The ending is brutal but effective, one of those endings I'm going to be thinking about for months to come. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/07/22 Full Review Read all reviews
