Critics Consensus
A rich visual treat for film fans, Mad God proves that even in the age of CGI, the cinematic allure of stop-motion animation remains strong.
Jordan Hoffman Decider This is a true, old school midnight movie, meant to expand your mind, initiate conversation and perhaps inspire you to stay up late one night working on something creative. Everyone in college should be forced to watch movies like this. Dec 14, 2022 Full Review David Sims The Atlantic There is a plot of sorts and plenty of grisly stop-motion violence, but Mad God is most impressive as a work of sheer atmosphere, a visual experience that is actually unlike any other. Aug 3, 2022 Full Review Adam Nayman The Ringer The best compliment you can pay to Mad God is to say it’s made in the image of its creator. DanTheMan 2 An apocalyptic nightmare of the highest order, I've never been more annoyed at myself for sleeping on a film until viewing Mad God, equal parts evocative as it is disturbing, the film is more than just an impressive technical feat, it's a sheer artistry come to life. An exquisitely imagined excretion that is revelatory, revolting and cruel. Lurking beneath the steampunk slime and gothic murk is a decidedly exhilarating exercise in visceral, boisterously unrestrained creativity. Phil Tippett has always been a master of his craft, so seeing his nearly 30-year-long passion project finally come to fruition is truly special, it's all been constructed in the most tenaciously grotesque way possible, one that has us in the palm of Tippett's masterful hands for the full 85 minutes giving us an unflinching tour through the darkest recesses of his mind. The combination of completely dialogue-free world-building and an outstanding musical score by Dan Wool creates a playfully morbid descent through a truly demented hellscape. Visceral, grungy and often surreal, the film boasts an impassioned story tackling themes of creation, exploitation and destruction; it might not make any literal statements but it all comes from a director with a lot to say about the world we occupy. A painstaking work of art brought into being through passion and sheer force of will, Mad God has moments of lunacy, instances of genius and plenty to fuel future bad dreams; horrifically grotesque but also beautiful in the most disturbed way imaginable. It doesn't show the consequences of a god who casts a deluge of misery on its followers. It shows a set of beings who would rather see others chewing up darkness without being able to swallow it. There’s a sick beauty in all the madness, one you'll find yourself unable to tear yourself away from. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/11/25 Full Review Val M what an awesome movie. I watched it 3 times. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/09/25 Full Review Chelsea T this has got to be one of the WORST films i have ever watched. there is no real story line. the film is visually and audibly unappealing. The first 30 min ceased to garner much interest in the story line as it involved a slow descent with views into different grotesque worlds that warp perspective and are overloaded with steampunk atmosphere and bodily fluids. Despite the plot "moving forward" it was so painfully slow that an hour into the film I still didnt care how it ended. i found mundane shots were too drawn out- one scene is 30 seconds of a clock ticking. there were also several scenes of someone just moving. I fought it out till the end just for several minutes of visualizations without any real explanation of the connections between the worlds. Even IF i wanted to go deeper into man not even being real and man being a drone for the higher ups to build their palaces, it would still be double thumbs down for me because of all the reasons above. also i would consider this more sci fi than horror. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/25 Full Review Ian F A truly remarkable, riveting work of cinematic art. Don’t let your search for a plot or meaning distract you from the visual feast of every shot. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/27/24 Full Review Andy K Surreal, nightmarish epic. Like a dream. Stunning moviegoing experience Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/14/24 Full Review Justin K One off the coolest movies i have ever watched Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/03/24 Full Review Read all reviews
