Critics Consensus
Rudy Mancuso's use of magical realism elevates Música, infusing its familiar narrative framework with a bracingly personal touch.
Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News “Música” might seem like it’s hitting beats we’ve grown accustomed to, but Mancuso’s sweet, soulful feature debut doesn’t follow in others’ footsteps. What a gem. Rated: 3/4 Apr 17, 2024 Full Review Carlos Aguilar Variety Now that Mancuso has gotten his origin story out onto the screen, it’s exciting to wonder what a sophomore effort could entail for him. For now, “Música” has earned him his filmmaking stripes. Apr 7, 2024 Full Review Nadira Goffe Slate For all that creativity and technical wizardry, the most impressive thing about Música is that, if you’ve been paying attention to Mancuso’s work, nothing present in the movie is entirely new. Apr 5, 2024 Full Review Kiko Martinez San Antonio Current The romantic comedy genre is given a significant boost of creativity and charm with Música. While there’s some typical rom-com comfort to be found, the movie consciously avoids cliches and plays to its own syncopated beat. Rated: B+ Jan 21, 2025 Full Review Emma Vine Loud and Clear Reviews By the end of Música, you will walk away from the viewing experience not only blown away by the film’s visuals but deeply impressed by Mancuso’s talent as an artist. Rated: 4/5 Aug 15, 2024 Full Review Jack Martin Film Feeder Música is a charming feature debut for filmmaker/star Rudy Mancuso, who conveys his synaesthesia through an engaging and impeccably crafted directorial style amidst a formulaic but engaging rom-com template. patrick S Great movie, but I didn't like the pacing. At some points, it was too slow, and then the ending came so fast that it was hard to fully appreciate. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/13/24 Full Review Rare T Absolutely beautiful; exactly what one would expect from Rudy Mancuso, although one would wish it was longer. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/10/24 Full Review Audience Member i love movies based on music Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/02/24 Full Review Troy H Very boring and slow. I really didn't care for any of the actors or the story. The plot is really dumb it's made for people who can't think, it's predictable and a rehash of many other better movies. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/25/24 Full Review Audience Member I hadn’t seen the trailer or knew Mancuso’s work, so had no idea what to expect. And what a great surprise! It’s really original and very different from any typical American musical, (thank god). Art direction, scenes direction and, especially, sounds were amazingly done -and everything felt 100% Brazilian cinema! The rhythmic sounds moments were the ice of cake here, as they should, as we’re graciously transported into Rudy’s peculiar mind. Loved it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/19/24 Full Review Sunil S Synesthesia depicted beautifully with great acting, direction, and camera work. There is a deeper meaning to the love-triangle where choosing between Isabella and Haley is same as choosing between what Rudy's heart says i.e. music and puppetry vs. Rudy's mother's expectations of a Brazilian partner and a stable career. Anwar's crazy vs. calm question again fits in the same meaning. Overall, the movie revolves around Rudy's struggle to manage his art form with his life.
