Critics Consensus

An intelligent and gripping vehicle for Aaron Pierre's star-making performance, Rebel Ridge lays down the law on its action-thriller contemporaries.

Adam Nayman The Ringer With a whip-smart plot, a strong lead in Aaron Pierre, and a standout villain in Don Johnson, director Jeremy Saulnier has done it again. Sep 18, 2024 Full Review Richard Brody New Yorker The film's hectically choreographed violence has less power than the characters' subtle yet precise glances of recognition or hostility or complicity. The movie's physicality, at its most vital, is infinitesimal. Sep 17, 2024 Full Review Jack Hamilton Slate Rebel Ridge is that rarest of things, an auteurist action thriller with brains and heart and guts, an electrifying and crowd-pleasing work of cinema, pulp art of the highest level. Sep 17, 2024 Full Review Jake Peffer Battle Royale With Cheese In the end, Rebel Ridge is a tense and all-around fantastic movie. Jeremy Saulnier has once again put together another great story. From the beautiful cinematography to the well written script, it all comes together so well. Sep 24, 2024 Full Review Tom Meek Cambridge Day There are many fine and realistic action sequences, but the film is as much a chess match of legal gamesmanship. Rated: 3/4 Sep 23, 2024 Full Review Jeffrey Peterson Geek Vibes Nation If Netflix is listening, these are the types of original films general audiences show up for and would likely pay to see in theaters...This is a quiet thriller and alternative western with a clear understanding of genre and craft. Jeff S A simple and well done revenge flick and modern throwback to the action genre feel of the 80's and 90's. The conceit behind the movie is as smart as it is enraging (and a very real thing). Marvel is probably kicking themselves for losing out on Aaron Pierre. He has generational talent written all over him. Kudos to Saulnier for once again delivering. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/25/24 Full Review Jared One of the best movies Netflix has produced over the past few years. The film starts intense from the first 2 minutes and continues to build throughout. Aaron Pierre is a certified future star in the business. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/25/24 Full Review Mona K I really enjoyed this movie. Solid acting with an intriguing plot. Intense, and current. They did such a great job with compact but clear character development. High,y recommended. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/25/24 Full Review Mark C Outstanding film with great acting, script and pacing. Don Johnson is outstanding as the corrupt small town cop and Aaron Pierre turns in a solid performance as a special forces marine vet who goes up against a small town corrupt police force. Jeremy Saulnier's direction and tight script as well as his skillful editing make this a suspenseful, unforgettable tale of action and injustice. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/25/24 Full Review mary m it was okay, it was a little boring if i am being the most honest. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/25/24 Full Review Alexander M This is my first time leaving a review here, I came here to do so because of how incredibly disappointed in this movie I was. Started off with a good story and a good setting but every time I expected it to pick up and get exciting it slowed down again. It never got to full speed and was very slow, long, and boring. The main character was much to passive and there was clearly some political under tones (not surprising it's a Netflix movie). This movie had so much potential to be like the great 80s action movies but it just never quite got there. Then at the end they gave you no ending resolution they just left it hanging. 2 hours of my life that I'll never get back. Don't Waste Your time!!!!!!
