Critics Consensus

Capturing the compromises, dedication, and human fallibility of the newsroom, September 5 is a worthy chronicle of a tragic flashpoint in broadcast media history.

Peter Rainer FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's a very good movie, very well-paced. Jan 17, 2025 Full Review Rafer Guzman Newsday A compelling journalism thriller with a fine cast and fascinating period details. Rated: 3/4 Jan 15, 2025 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times In 1972, covering an act of terrorism as it unfolded was a new challenge, and as “September 5” so brilliantly illustrates, the men and women of ABC Sports proved to be more than up to the task. Rated: 4/4 Jan 15, 2025 Full Review A.C. Koch Spectrum Culture A ground-level view of the 1972 Munich Massacre, the film hammers home a two-forked message: nothing is the same, and nothing has changed. Jan 17, 2025 Full Review Karen Gordon Original Cin This thoughtful recreation of the coverage of the Munich Massacre is a satisfying thriller and a study of the complexity of media coverage. Rated: A Jan 17, 2025 Full Review Patrick McDonald WBGR-FM (93.7 FM - Monroe, WI) This 1972 Munich Olympics hostage story has over a dozen narrative films and docs, and this point of view through broadcaster ABC-TV is absorbing and tense, but not as fully present within the history. Seek that elsewhere, because this is the first draft. Rated: 3.5/5 Jan 17, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Sheryl P In some places, it was difficult for me to hear and understand some of the dialogue. I understand that the characters were under a lot of pressure and their natural speech in such circumstances would sometimes be muttering, terse short phrases or grunts. But as an onlooker who wasn't in the room and isn't a part of newsroom culture, I couldn't always follow what was being said. Nonetheless, it was an excellent film which explored several meaningful themes, When my husband and I left the theater, we felt like we had been through the wringer, which is probably the effect the director had in mind. Well worth seeing! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/25 Full Review Sean Great procedural on the early days of TV journalism, well shot, well acted. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/17/25 Full Review BK Great acting and an excellent script! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/25 Full Review ELISSA Gerzog It was NOT played nor on any schedule. Manager had no idea if it will be shown at that theater. Please refund to my origional payment card. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/17/25 Full Review Howard G The movie was just ok. The question and answer after was horrible. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Anne M Great acting though the events are a part of history, recalling them through the eyes of the team sent to cover the 1972 Summer Olympics gives it a fresh perspective nice to see how everyone reacts to each new development with great resilience despite the newness of the situation and the time constraints on every decision. Almost like a thriller. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/08/25 Full Review Read all reviews
