Critics Consensus
A deceptively simple drama about the artist's life, Showing Up reunites Kelly Reichardt and Michelle Williams to absorbing effect.
Alison Willmore New York Magazine/Vulture There’s been no better movie to encapsulate the year, and no better movie, period, than Kelly Reichardt’s matchless Showing Up, which is all about making art in a world that also requires you to make money. Dec 9, 2023 Full Review Adam Nayman The Ringer Not only is Showing Up the best movie of the year, it’s arguably the one most in need of rescue. That’s your cue, friends. Jul 21, 2023 Full Review Adam Graham Detroit News [Reichardt and Williams's] shorthand creates its own universe, and it's as insular as the world they're depicting. Outsiders will likely feel like they're showing up without an invite. Rated: C Apr 28, 2023 Full Review CJ Sheu The News Lens International Reichardt is one of the few directors who truly knows how to use Williams, and the resulting portrait is detailed, deep, and compassionate. Aug 26, 2024 Full Review Whang Yee Ling The Straits Times (Singapore) The movie is candid about the frustrations and resentments within the insular art community – frenemies Lizzy and Jo’s perfectly played rivalry is the central comic relationship – but also art-making as a spiritual vocation. Rated: 4/5 Jun 27, 2024 Full Review Sarah Vincent Sarah G Vincent Views The movie does not make fun of the artist characters but is as earnest as they are. The film is about people’s process and has an underlying cautionary moral to not judge people based on how we perceive them. Jun 2, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews
Jen Best part was the free macrame demo at the end. Pointless, dull, waste of time. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/27/23 Full Review Will Kelly Reichart creates wonderful character pieces that only appear mundane to the inattentive. Her ordinary settings host stories of quiet ambition and perseverance, and Showing Up is her best since the underrated Night Moves. The characters seem cold and distant from one another, but gradually bond over seemingly inconsequential things like wounded birds, broken water heaters and neighborhood art shows. Michelle Williams continues to be one of our most surprising and adventurous actors. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/25/23 Full Review James D Extremely well directed and acted film. You almost feel like you are watching a documentary. It will appeal to people who like intelligent, character-driven films but not those looking for a lot of action, a fast pace, or wild plot twists. Its an art house film in the best sense of that term and a truly great one. Michelle Williams performance is extraordinary even by her lofty standards. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/22/23 Full Review Robyn K Acting talent was good. The rest was boring. Difficult to stay awake. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/22/23 Full Review Jeffrey T Slow, no story, no point. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/22/23 Full Review Roy J Good, but not as good as First Cow. Hong Chau is going to be the greatest actor of this era. I want her in everything! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/10/23 Full Review Read all reviews
