Critics Consensus

Deeply creepy visuals and a standout Sosie Bacon further elevate Smile's unsettling exploration of trauma, adding up to the rare feature that satisfyingly expands on a short.

You may need to pay close attention in order to keep up with the story, but fans of slow-burning horror should leave Smile with a grin.

Christina Newland iNews.co.uk A skin-prickling, unnerving viewing experience, Parker Finn’s first feature is an astonishing demonstration of film-making restraint. Rated: 4/5 Sep 18, 2024 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode and Mayo's Take (YouTube) It's not the most original film of recent years... [but] it uses a familiar box of tricks rather well. Jan 3, 2024 Full Review Scott Tobias The Reveal (Substack) Finn uses the strength of his conceit to turn the screws, raising tension through the Ring-like timeline Rose faces and the sheer relentlessness of her supernatural tormentor. Rated: 3.5/5 Dec 19, 2022 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com ...Smile is a remarkably well-scripted and played psychological thriller that only lapses into horror cliché in the last ten minutes… Rated: 4/5 Aug 11, 2024 Full Review Brittany Patrice Witherspoon Pop Culture Reviews Finn wrote a simple and derivative script and directed the hell out it with Smile. Rated: 3.5/5 Jul 25, 2024 Full Review Tamma Moksha The Hindu Despite some of its missteps, the horror film’s theme of inheriting mental illness and walking down a path that you have lived dreading all your life is poignant. Jessica Great little horror movie. Jumpscares were good, and its a horror movie that has a rewatching stance. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/06/25 Full Review Carl G This was one of the most scariest films I’ve seen in a while. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/20/24 Full Review Justin H This is a familiar story that is told and performed with precision. It’s slow burn, squirm in your seat, anxiety-inducing horror. My rating checklist for horror movies is: 1) Did I think about it the next day? 2) Do I want to watch it again? 3a) If yes to #2, have I purposefully avoided doing so? 3b) If I have watched it again, did it hold its impact? 4) Do I remember it in vivid detail a year later? 5) Did it get stupid at any point during the run time? A 5-star rating means 1-4 are “yes” and 5 is “no.” Smile got knocked down a peg because the last 10 minutes gets really dumb, but then the final scene manages to salvage it again. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/18/24 Full Review Markay I enjoyed this movie. Have to rewatch it before going to see the second one. I’m anxious Can’t wait to see Smile 2 have heard nothing but good reviews so far Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/18/24 Full Review Elizabeth loved it. I can't wait for the next one Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/21/24 Full Review Rease Enjoyed this movie , decent jump scares , plot and ending . Overall in my opinion good horror movie Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
