Critics Consensus
Like a colorfully overengineered gewgaw on the shelf, Toys might look like fun, but its seemingly limitless possibilities lead mainly to confusion and disappointment.
David Ansen Newsweek The failure of Barry Levinson's Toys is of a different order: it's the kind of folly only a very fine filmmaker could make, a labor of misguided love. But at the most fundamental level, Toys is a film not quite sure what it's about. Roger K Ignore the negative reviews. This is an amazing movie, doubly-so as its fantastical world is believably realized pre-CGI. It's wondrous to behold, loaded with fun details, and stands up to rewatching again and again. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/23/24 Full Review Cody H This film doesn’t get the recognition it deserves such desperately. It is a film that shows the beauty of art, art direction, film telling, and trying out. Even the story might not be the best story ever, it does have it charms and makes you feel the warm magic of its makers! The art direction and eye for details are stunning. It is well understandable that this film received two oscar nominations. A film one must watch, even the music might not be that good, it has a magical vibe that had become a cult classic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/02/24 Full Review Chris P I like this film. Set Designs are phenomenal. The story was nice. Helped me get immersed within the world it was portraying. Is it perfect? No, but I would recommend watching at least once. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/05/24 Full Review ad m SO IMPORTANT ANTIMILITAR AND SOCIAL MESSAGE DURING THESE TIMES WHEN FACISM RISE AGAIN EVERYWHERE Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/24 Full Review Kiran S It's a movie trapped in two places. The basis and setting seem to be a kid's movie. But the movie itself deals with very real themes and quick humour that a child likely won't appreciate. It's completely a Robin Williams, where everyone is seemingly keep up with him. That said, he's more subdued in many of his roles in terms of physical performances, but he hits every joke in the way only he can. It's one of those movies that doesn't fit nicely in a specific genre or target audience. It's a satire, a drama, a fantasy. At times the amazing visuals can distract from the story. It's also very 90's while also having a strange timeless quality to it. It's not for everyone, and adults will likely enjoy and appreciate the movie more, despite the movie being named and about toys. If you haven't seen it, it's worth a watch, it deserves that much. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/10/23 Full Review Blu B What in the heck did I just watch...Completely nonsensical and incoherent for 90% of the runtime. Atrociously bizarre cinematography, acting, editing, pacing and sometimes I don't even know. The main song is catchy but everything else music wise is bad including the MTV song. Tons of production value and colorful design but this never stops with the ridiculous antics and throwing insane stuff at you like the Super Mario Bros Movie. The waste of the cast and director here is just mind boggling. None of the jokes get even one laugh and are just random, nonsensical, bizarre, surreal, and aren't clever at all. Deny this exists on top of skipping it. I guess this is technically a Christmas film also and it's one of the worst Christmas films I've ever seen.
