Critics Consensus

After a sluggish start, Taboo takes hold as a mysterious, dark, and often brutal period drama with plenty of promise as a series -- most notably evident in Tom Hardy's exceptionally watchable performance.

James Jackson Times (UK) If you could fathom what Hardy was growling, Delaney's closing run-in with Jonathan Pryce's East India Company boss suddenly put things on a knife-edge, promising just the sort of conflict you'd return for. Rated: 3/5 Dec 28, 2017 Full Review Andrew Billen Times (UK) I want to be kind about the series because it looked fantastic. It had, as I say, great lines. There has not been such a blissful collective display of character acting for a while: the best supporting actor gong goes to the lot of them. Rated: 4/5 Dec 27, 2017 Full Review Deborah Ross Daily Mail (UK) ... if you have ever wished to know what you get when too many alpha males gather in a room, perhaps this is it. Rated: 2/5 Sep 1, 2017 Full Review Chris Sawin GeeksHaveGame Freshly unique, gloriously offensive, and delightfully vicious with superb costume design, an unbelievably talented cast, and a riveting story that thrives on reeling its audience in. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 30, 2019 Full Review Matt Miller Esquire Magazine Not even often-stunning performances... can dig Taboo out of its messy, overwrought darkness. Oct 19, 2018 Full Review Anne Brodie What She Said The Hardys have created a period piece with a grim, noir feel, and ballsy execution. There are plenty of betrayals, murders, conspiracies and a clash of primitive and modern western values. Aug 24, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Rohit R Dark, deranged, and entirely watchable! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/25 Full Review S M Excellent series, well made, wish Netflix would learn from shows like this. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/06/24 Full Review Michael V. P It holds your attention and as a period film, there's a lot to take in and appreciate. Wonderful costumes, art direction and set design. One of those Tom Hardy roles where he doesn't have to step out of who he is, and it works well. Not as much exploration of the context or history of voodoo more than voodoo is simply part of the character. In terms of a look back into history and getting a feel for things during that time, it held my attention and interest firmly throughout the first season. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/07/24 Full Review Avindu G This is a regency era crime thriller that's fuelled with vengeful spirits infesting a seasoned sailor on seas of life. He walks the streets and death follows known as devil itself Dealaney is a character that was acted without a single break. The mystified look that signals numbness to anything that happens in the ruins of society's underbelly is the tone setter. Precise work by the whole cast in piecing together this unique period drama. Descriptive audio effects. A wide range of characters that could keep the audience immersed. Excellent story of strategy and action that demands another season. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/08/24 Full Review Anders L Tom Hardy delivers an excellent performance as James Keziah Delaney. There were some rocky moments in the script but they were overall overshadowed by some excellent performances. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/30/24 Full Review Andrew G Cant wait for season 2 ! Tom Hardy’s Brooding on the edge of madness, while pulling the strings of his allies and enemies alike from the shadows, and when he drops his characters Catchphrase “I have a use for you”, Sends shivers of excitement for you know a plan has reached its conclusion and they are trapped in the Noose unable to refuse his requests.
