Critics Consensus
Beef pairs its second season with winning performers and a crackling sense of ingenuity in a saga that Lee Sung Jin perfectly anchors through his mastery of class satire and the unexpected modes of human nature.
Chris Vognar Boston Globe May 13 The performances are all killer -- Mulligan, in particular, has never been better -- and while the personnel has changed, creator Lee Sung Jin’s authorial voice remains wickedly smart. But Lee marbles other theories and indictments into his meat concerning the privilege of extreme emotion and behavioral honesty. Go to Full Review Nicholas Harris New Statesman May 6 This could all get a bit relentless and wearing, but fortunately the quality of the writing carries it as satire and not as nihilism. Go to Full Review Danny Minton Houston Community Newspapers Jun 7 I can see why such a cast would take on this project, but I didn’t think the story-telling to be nearly as strong as the first, and ultimately, the last chapters, while creatively disastrous, are hard to connect with. Jenifer T @RT6800321 4d Not as excellent as season 1 but still enjoyable and nuanced in its own way. See more S A @Ethan7878 5d Don't care so much about the popcorn meter. this show has been very entertaining for me! excellent castings as well See more Leila F @Le456 Jul 3 It has been excclent, hasn't felt slow at all. Everyone's giving amazing performances. Charles Melton is leading guy material and I hope Hollywood starts treating him like one. See more Marta P @Marta942 Jul 2 It is maybe the best show i've seen this year. really incredible, from the case/performances, to the plotting, to the overall look/sound/score/vibe. Excellent show, highly recommend. Better than the first season, even. See more Marci M @Fydy567 Jul 2 I liked it a lot too super raw, emotional, and different from the first season but still intense in its own way and I loved the other celeb cameos. See more Mayra K @Koch78 Jul 1 S2 is definitely helped more by the strength of its cast than the core story this time around. Cailee Spaeny and Charles Melton, the way they portray a young couple and the evolution of each of their characters over the season, are killing it alongside Isaac/Mulligan across the season. I don't think the (titular) beef was as compelling this time around, but the exploration of truth within relationships and characters being truthful with themselves is well worth watching.
