Critics Consensus
Groundbreaking, but unfortunately grating, Bob (Hearts) Abishola undermines its own progressive premise with underwhelming humor that relies too heavily on outdated stereotypes.
Kelly Lawler USA Today Although the jokes are broad and the studio audience laughter as loud and long as any other Lorre show, there's something quiet, simple and satisfying about "Abishola" that makes it stand out among the producer's canon Rated: 3/4 Oct 8, 2019 Full Review Caroline Framke Variety The show probably can't keep them from a relationship for too long without stretching its premise too thin, but for now, their dynamic is a refreshingly unique one for a broadcast network sitcom. Sep 24, 2019 Full Review Mike Hale New York Times Olowofoyeku and Gardell work diligently, but they're not given much to play besides good intentions. Sep 23, 2019 Full Review Bill Brioux Brioux.tv For a series about a sock king, the premise doesn’t have legs. Oct 28, 2022 Full Review Kristi Turnquist Oregonian The show is well-intentioned, but so far walks an unsteady line between the canned-laughter sound of a run-of-the-mill sitcom, and an attempt at something more ambitious. Nov 7, 2019 Full Review John Griffiths AARP Movies for Grownups If you got chuckles and awws out of Mike & Molly, cuddle up with this twist on that 2010-2016 hit. Corey N Every time there's a good she they canceled it and brang the shitty one Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/05/24 Full Review Mason K This show is fantastic and one of the best pieces of media I've seen in a long time. It has an extremely accurate depiction of Nigerian culture, as well as a hilarious and heartwarming relationship, especially bringing Bob and his family Into it . The show is truly spectacular, emphasizing the differences while also finding the similarities to build a very strong society and relationship. The show encapsulates melting pot, ideologies and bringing everyone together. Those that gave this a terrible review are nothing more than woke extremist that are upset, because the show is genuine and heartfelt and not about politics. I strongly encourage everyone to give the show a try as it is inspirational to what modern media could look like. The show works very hard to bring people together and that is what our focus should be. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/21/23 Full Review Audience Member First few episodes didn't do it for me: Racist jokes, fat shaming, bad stereotypes, doxing... Could not see how a show like that was OK. However half way the first season I got hooked. It's a good show that needed to find it's pace. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I so love this show..... I look forward to watching a new episode every chance I get on my lunch hour with the CBS app..... Totally makes my day Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member It's cute and funny. I like how it portraits a clash of cultures without falling in disrespectful jokes. Abishola's family is adorable. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member What an awkward show...so excited by the writing for Abishola & her family, such good stuff & something I haven't' seen before! Give us more of them & their backgrounds! But no - we have to endure Bob & the shockingly dysfunctional Wheeler's...that storyline is stale & tiring - the controlling mom (who I am slightly offended by her storyline of the stroke - it's almost mocking & I'm not for that), the lazy brother with a heart, the emotionally challenged sister & what about Bob? He does not fit at all. I appreciated Billy G in Mike & Molly, but no here (and what is UP with that ridiculous mustache? we know it's you Mike) There are some good moments in this show that deserve more & characters need more development. Let's see if they can do that! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
