Critics Consensus
Sumptuous design, soapy drama, and a sterling cast make Bridgerton a delightful treat.
Carolyn Hinds Observer However, for all it's finery, there are snags in the bright fabric of the show that I just can't overlook, namely the negative stereotyping of its Black characters and colorism in the casting. Jul 26, 2021 Full Review Debi Enker The Age (Australia) The plot is as thin as a London society belle; the unsurprising dramatic developments are delivered with the subtlety of a sledgehammer; the characters are mostly caricatures; and anything vaguely notable is constantly repeated. Jan 27, 2021 Full Review Aditi Natasha Kini Bitch Media Bridgerton is peddling an insulting brand of aesthetic level justice through the common vocabulary of representation. It's way past time to complicate that vocabulary. Jan 16, 2021 Full Review Yasmine Kandil Discussing Film An addictive investigation into the intricacies of love. Janice F So sad there were no more seasons. Couple misses were eliminating cast too quickly, like Daphne and her husband. Would have been fun to watch him adjust to fatherhood with his issues. Then the viscount, very little screen time. Adjustment in the household would have been great fodder. And the mistake to unveil Lady Whitsledown, that was a great secret meant to be kept n could of kept the audience guessing and engaged. Too much shown sex. Small amounts would have gone a long way because the stories were much more than sex. The queen was amazing character. Left wanting more, darn it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review Naila N I really appreciated Bridgerton's first season, titled "The Duke & I" because it was set in early 19th century England. The costumes in the series are truly a feast for the eyes, with unique bright colors that reflect the personalities and social status of the characters. I also enjoyed the music, which combines modern songs rearranged with classical instruments. The romance between Daphne Bridgerton and Simon Basset really captivated me, and the chemistry between them was incredible. What I found was that the series depicts the Regency era with magnificent settings and the attention to sartorial detail adds a lot of depth to the story. The family dynamics, especially in the Bridgerton household, are heartwarming and easy to relate to. I was intrigued by the way the series blended drama, romance, and humor that highlighted the social expectations of the time. The characters felt complex, even though they lived in a world of luxury. Some of the things I didn't like about the series was that it didn't just focus on the main characters' love story. Instead, it also focuses on the other characters in their love story, which makes the storyline a bit complicated at times. Also, the plot twist at the end of episode 8 made me have to wait for the second season, which took quite a while. The series captivates viewers through its exploration of a world filled with rules and expectations, where every decision must be carefully considered. The contrast between personal freedom and social obligation is an important theme that feels relevant, and Bridgerton presents it in a dramatic and engaging way. The strength of the story lies in the characters' journey to balance their personal desires with the roles expected by society and how the series portrays social pressures, especially those experienced by women. The series doesn't hesitate to show the challenges that women faced back then, from marriage expectations to lack of control over their own lives. Although the characters live in a world of luxury, they are still bound by social expectations that are still relevant today. This adds depth to the story, making it more than just a historical romance. Overall, i think Bridgerton Season 1 to be an entertaining and eye pleasing series, which combines historical elements with a modern twist. The exciting storyline, beautiful costumes, and strong chemistry between the main characters make it a joy to watch. Although some parts of the storyline feel complex and confusing. Bridgerton creates a world that is luxurious and full of intrigue, making it a worthy watch and keeping viewers curious for the next season. It's a perfect blend of drama, romance, and social commentary that will keep viewers interested in the seasons to come. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/21/24 Full Review Ashley R Something about this season just falls flat. Also, way too many sex scenes. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/27/24 Full Review Audience Member The beginning of my love for Regency dramas (Polin owns my heart) 💛 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/17/24 Full Review Sara J Fun fun fun. Beautiful people making bad decisions! Season 2 is my favorite because Simone Ashley and Jonathan Bailey are the most beautiful of all, but this is clearly subjective and I wouldn’t argue with anyone who says different because there are no wrong answers. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/21/25 Full Review Emma B For me, absolutely the best season so far. The best and unfortunately also the shortest love story. I would love to have these two in every season because the chemistry between them is just the most genuine, which is more than you can say for Anthony and Kate, for example. A special love goes to Rege-Jean Page. His character perfectly portrays the development of a narcissist (with all the consequences that start in early childhood), and in the end we see a pretty quick recovery thanks to Daphe's love and his eventual separation from the father bully.
