Critics Consensus
An impressive performance from Antonio Banderas rescues Genius: Picasso from condensed melodrama.
Hugo Rifkind Times (UK) Unintentionally hilarious. Oct 18, 2018 Full Review Rachel Cooke New Statesman The result is unendurable. Banderas is - I'd almost forgotten - a good actor. But even he can't make his lines sound convincing. May 3, 2018 Full Review Melanie McFarland Salon.com If the expectation of Genius is to grant the viewer some sliver of enlightenment about the inner workings of complex minds, it has fallen down in its mission yet again. Apr 25, 2018 Full Review John Tones Espinof 'Picasso' exceeds expectations: it aligns the young Picasso (Alex Rich) with the adult one with continuous jumps in time and tells his life effectively. Movies Genius: Picasso [interrogates] how gender has defined, and restricted, our understanding of genius isn't so much subtext as it is openly, emphatically... text. Jan 21, 2019 Full Review Alan French AwardsCircuit.com The series is interesting at times. Yet despite a strong performance from Banderas, the rest of the show feels dragged down Rated: 2/4 Oct 10, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews
Audience Member Fascinating story of not only Picasso and the path to his art but of history also, which affected his art. Great performance by Antonio B Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member It's pretty, it covers an interesting historical period, includes interesting historical figures... But it's extremely meh. The writing and acting is uninspired. I didn't feel anything for any of the characters and the dialogue can get very cringe. Picasso's character is a whiney, misunderstood artist type whose abhorrent, abusive behaviour isn't treated by the creators of the show with any kind of seriousness, and almost comes across as justified because he's just *such* a genius. Save yourself the time and read Picasso's wiki page instead. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Season 2 of Genius on Pablo Picasso was pretty good. Antonio Banderas, Alex Rich, and the rest of the cast did an excellent job in this miniseries. This true story about the achievements and personal life of Pablo Picasso was dramatic and inspirational. It gives a deep look into the life of Picasso and what he did to inspire the world. If you haven't seen this miniseries yet, check it out sometime. It's worth watching. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member it's okay. I like Antonio as an actor and the times in which he lived are interesting. The scenery and production quality are good. I don't particularly like his paintings and so maybe the story didn't resonate with me as one about an artist I really liked. I was surprised that in a series titled "genius" they wouldn't go with Newton, Ben Franklin, Edison. If you are going to go with an artist, how about Da Vinci? The series is titled "genius" after all. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Exceptional!! A masterpiece. Banderas is brilliant as Picasso! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I thought that the acting, directing and Music were all awesome. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
