Critics Consensus

A prickling debut that pulls few punches, Hacks deftly balances its sharp critiques of the comedy world with more intimate moments, all the while giving the incomparable Jean Smart a role worthy of her talents -- and an excellent partner in Hannah Einbinder.

Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya Autostraddle Hacks takes two very unlikable characters, mixes them together, and transmutes them into something truly irresistible. It’s a staggering feat of chemistry. May 23, 2022 Full Review Shannon Keating BuzzFeed News Exploring what’s funny about the pain of human existence isn’t anything new in comedy, of course, but the genre has perhaps taken on a new tenor now that comedians are writing about the particularities of their self-loathing... Apr 5, 2022 Full Review Benji Wilson Daily Telegraph (UK) The pacing is exquisite, with every episode revealing just enough of Deb and Ava’s backstory to cast them repeatedly in a new light. Rated: 5/5 Apr 1, 2022 Full Review Bree Fowler CNET Send this show to anyone who tells you women aren't funny. Better yet, tell them that debate ended decades ago, then put your feet up and enjoy this year's most perfect piece of television. Mar 30, 2023 Full Review Bill Brioux Brioux.tv [Smart] completely gets under the well-pampered skin of this formidable joke-diva. Oct 4, 2022 Full Review Michael Cuby them. An industry satire as hilarious as it is scathing, Hacks is an odd-couple comedy perfectly suited for our modern age. Sep 27, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Jim W I normally always find faults in a series, but I didn't with Hacks. It's startling and raw at first. Just when you think you know enough about a character to like/not like them, they redeem themselves in the next episode. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/04/25 Full Review Deepa T Good acting by both ladies. Unfortunately an empty script. Also unnecessarily vulgar. Boring and a waste of time. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/25/25 Full Review Dylan T One of the best shows in the last decade. Funny, well acted and has the feels in it. Deborah Vance’s character is iconic Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/10/25 Full Review Niki M What is it about current American TV shows that they all seem to feature unlikeable characters, bullying their way through human interactions with no consequences, and being slapped down constantly by other characters more appalling than they? Sorry, but I don't get the rave reviews. It's crass and predictable and uncomfortable to watch. Used to be, the bad guys got their come-uppance. Now, the bad guys get to misbehave, trample over everyone, bully and threaten and insult... and we root for them? No, count me out. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/28/24 Full Review An M Absolutely fabulous show! The character development is simply wonderful and well written and executed. Jean Smart is truly fantastic and her comedic timing is amazing. She steals every scene she’s in. Highly recommend it. Hannah Einbinder is able to hold her own against Jean Smart’s brilliant acting, she is extremely talented. Love this show so much!
