Critics Consensus
A fun and fast-paced addition to the CW's stable of supernatural high school series, Legacies emerges from the shadows of its sister shows an unexpected delight.
Valerie Anne Autostraddle They never take themselves too seriously, enjoying the hell out of some classic sci-fi tropes and dismantling some fantasy lore. Mar 29, 2019 Full Review Samantha Highfill Entertainment Weekly Legacies is not at all what I was expecting... I probably would've scoffed and thought that the show was going too big. But I have to tell you guys: This show works. Yes, it's going big, but that's what makes it so fun (amongst other things). I am all in. Rated: B+ Nov 15, 2018 Full Review Emily St. James Vox You'll have little idea of what the show looks like, beyond the vague sense that attractive 20-somethings playing teenagers will make out a lot. Oct 26, 2018 Full Review Keisha Hatchett TV Guide But while vastly different from the shows that came before, Legacies never forgets its roots and serves up delightful Easter eggs. Nov 15, 2018 Full Review Melissa Camacho Common Sense Media Vampire spinoff has new characters, violence, sexiness. Rated: 3/5 Oct 29, 2018 Full Review Paul Dailly TV Fanatic As someone who is still bitter about how The Originals' series finale played out, I was perfectly prepared to be disappointed by Legacies Season 1 Episode 1, but there was a lot to like about it. Rowan C This show was way better than I thought it was going to be, especially this season. Hope is taking on a new life while trying to move on from the fact that her Mon and Dad are gone forever. I love the cast so far, I love that Alaric is finally teaching kids and I like how all of them use their abilities. So far a good show and hopefully it gets better from here. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review Luka G SUCH A GREAT SHOW!!!! but I feel like Julie pled needs to rethink everything she did with this show cause she could've done so much with Hope and the twins (Lizzie and Josie) 3 extremely powerful witches and let's not talk about Hope being a whole worldly threat and In legacies she's fighting ponies??? 😠Julie you need to redo this show from the scrap. MAKE WHAT WE TRULY DESERVE!!!! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/06/24 Full Review Christian F In comparison to TVD and TO this show is lacking. Pretty much every episode is the same plot, a character dies then they spend the next episode bringing them back and then someone else dies. They immediately try to force connections between characters and the audience and it fails. Also all four season are an endless call back of the same monsters over and over again. Bringing back a fan fav here or there is great but over and over again with every monster they face. The idea of forgotten monsters was really great just very poorly executed. The fight scenes are very anticlimactic and extremely poorly written, dramatic music plays and slow motion endings for a 15 sec fight scene seems extremely corny and a major let down compared the the days of Elijah and Klaus taking on 100 vamps to 1. If you are looking for something to watch after TVD or TO and want it to be a reminder of them I do not suggest this. It was a big let down for a final series to a trilogy. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/20/23 Full Review Audience Member this show is a disgrace to its forefathers and a failed attempt to attract younger generations! Im glad it's canceled. and trust me I've pushed myself with the hope it will get. what a disappointment! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member The story line is shockingly bad, hopes acting is appalling throughout and the way she shown as a bad ass when rly she is so little making everything about her and how the other characters let her walk all of them. None of this bad writing would of worked in VD or the originals Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member A low high(not a low to high but a step down from medium low) budget supernatural tv show stuck due to budget constraints around a school for supernatural creatures. A budget so low that they couldn't even shoot in the city itself but around the school instead. Instead of story arcs, the script is instead what is the monster of the week and how do we kill it. Usual CW agenda cram down your throat but a little more gentle this series around. They finally did something to save the show in season 4 where Hope switches off her humanity and leaves the school and city...only to go back to it cuz they reached their budget limit. I don't think the writers understand the concept of humanity. Instead they think if they switch off the humanity, vampires become instant evil like humanity is the goodness inside of a person, the ability to do the right thing or something. Well what about an evil vampire with humanity on, they basically the same as a good person with humanity off only it seems they kill less then the latter. So if humanity off is like switching the conscious off without the remorse when doing a bad thing, doesn't mean they would do a bad thing every time. They just wouldn't care less if they did or they didn't, a truly neutral character then. Right? Though I watch this show as background noise when using my secondary monitor, I would have rather watch the supernatural spin off with the girls which was one of the options they could have went with during selection of the next series to pilot. That would have been way more interesting then a monster of the week at a school...sure it would have been the same monster of the week but then would have a story arc that goes through the season and it would be placed all over Vancouver as other places of the US and the backdrop would have been everywhere and not just the school and the grounds beside it.
