Critics Consensus
With performances by father-son duo Kurt and Wyatt Russell that work a charm, Monarch adds a welcome wrinkle to the Godzilla legacy by honing its monstrous scope to a very human level.
A.A. Dowd Primetimer All the interpersonal stuff seems rather… well, small compared to the existence of walking, dinosaur-shaped atomic bombs. Feb 28, 2024 Full Review James Grebey New York Magazine/Vulture It’s more than a little underwhelming to have an episode teeing up a future plot development that’s ultimately not that interesting, especially when the human drama around it isn’t the best Monarch can do. Rated: 2/5 Dec 22, 2023 Full Review Craig Mathieson Sydney Morning Herald While this spin-off series has to accommodate a recent blockbuster revival of Godzilla movies, it does a good job of establishing its own identity. Nov 28, 2023 Full Review Joe George Wealth of Geeks Monarch uses its two timelines to fill the screen with more: more music, more plot, and more characters. Very little of it is good. Rated: 5/10 Jul 20, 2024 Full Review Joonatan Itkonen Toisto.net I wish this was two separate seasons. I really do. Because now, instead of one fantastic Godzilla show and one middling to decent one, we have a series that comes to life only long enough to frustrate the audience. Rated: 2/5 Jul 3, 2024 Full Review Dónal Lynch Sunday Independent (Ireland) A welcome throwback in this series about two siblings uncovering their family’s links to a secret organisation. Laze T Argue with a brick wall idc i hate this show to slow, sorry not sorry i hate this show character's idc about them and yea bad sorry Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/25 Full Review Ryan P Very boring, slow, and poorly done. You barely see any monsters. The story never really makes any sense. You hardly see any monsters. But you get a healthy dose of terrible Gen Z acting and story tropes. This was made for the maturity level of a 13 year old. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/28/25 Full Review Leprechaun K The storyline actually isn't that bad at all. It kept you engaged. The problem being there are not Monsters, like the are cameos are a few second at the most. Other than Godzilla, all the creature designs were really. Hopefully they took notes and make season 2 better. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/25 Full Review Jay C WE NEEEEED ANOTHER SEASONNNN!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/25 Full Review Marco C I'm halfway through the first season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and it’s already started to bore me. The new generation of characters is just bad—st*p!d, even. I don’t know if this is a "millennial thing," but their actions and reasoning feel incredibly out-of-touch and unrealistic. Instead of being relatable or engaging, they come across as unnecessarily dramatic, which drags the whole show down. The character Cate, in particular, is super annoying. She’s not smart, and the way she talks and thinks is frustratingly shallow and "bi!73**y." If someone like these characters existed in real life, by now they would have realized that what’s happening around them is way bigger than their personal little dramas. Instead, we’re stuck with her being fixated on “just looking for their father” without considering the bigger picture or why he’s out there doing what he’s doing. And the sheer st****t*y of these characters not even thinking to capture evidence of monsters on their smartphones—seriously? In the age of social media and instant recording, it’s hard to suspend disbelief that no one even tries. The pacing is slow, the drama feels forced, and the entire storyline so far is just boring and annoying. I really hoped for something better, but so far, Monarch is just a disappointment. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/25/24 Full Review M M The title should read 'Monarch: Paucity of Monsters. Where are the monsters other than Godzilla every other monster seems to make cameo appearances. Give me some monsters then we can talk legacy... Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/28/24 Full Review Read all reviews
