Critics Consensus
An odd jumble of campiness and sincerity, homage and satire, The Orville never quite achieves liftoff.
Mey Rude Autostraddle The tone of the show makes it even more confusing, as it has an air of self importance and intellectualism about it, but mixes that with a complete lack of understanding about the current cultural and political climate, and dick jokes. Oct 5, 2021 Full Review Graeme Blundell The Australian There are few buzzes, though, and little hilarity in this depressing effort. Sep 28, 2018 Full Review Carol Midgley Times (UK) I don't love it at all. Indeed I could summarise that first episode in three words. Not. Very. Funny. Rated: 2/5 Dec 29, 2017 Full Review CJ Sheu Review Film Review I was first drawn by the fact that Kelly Grayson is played by Adrianne Palicki and her great hair, and that Kelly and Ed Mercer (MacFarlane) are divorced Commander and Captain[.] [...] The greatest merit [...] is [...] the casualization of starship life. Aug 4, 2022 Full Review Alberto Carlos Espinof The third episode, despite its good intentions and even being clearly better than the pilot, fails to completely redeem the series. [Full Review in Spanish] Aug 12, 2019 Full Review Rachel Leishman The Mary Sue Overall, the show is entertaining, and it's a great look at how we view our favorite sci-fi shows-and how we can make them feel fresh in the modern age. John F Too many of the main characters act like collage kids. The jokes are more miss than hit. The humor and pacing is very tame and 'Disneyfied'. The settings are not super SciFi but more like present say America moved to space. Besides that, it's ok entertainment if you are procrastinating.. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/16/25 Full Review Stevan L Being easily the weakest of the 3 seasons, season 1 establishes the characters well enough, tells some interesting stories and sets the series up perfectly for the stellar seasons that followed. The humor can be dry at times Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/21/24 Full Review Ben J This TV show is pretty much a love letter to Star Trek: The Next Generation from the '80s and '90s, bringing back the same winning format that we all grew up with and loved. In fact, I'd say it's the true Star Trek successor of the modern day, because the modern Star Trek shows just haven't captured the same feel and magic, which The Orville, in its own vehicle, has beautifully achieved. The humor strikes a perfect balance not making it overly comedic, but allowing for a bit of tension in the stories too. Absolutely love the series and can't wait for more! Definitely a must see especially for any old school Star Trek fan. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/15/24 Full Review Forrest H A great break from super serious sci fi shows, a tongue in cheek light take on the likes of Star Trek, with some genuine laugh out loud moments interspersed with some great story lines and some solid character development. In season one they build a solid universe with varied alien species with their own quirks and lays the traditional enemy storyline. For a comedy there are some serious plot lines with reflections on society... oh and the best bit, dick jokes! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/19/24 Full Review Audience Member There is nothing to watch today, I am watching this series for the 3rd time. I'm a big Star Trek fan, but I really relax with this series. I really enjoy the humour - 100% Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/09/24 Full Review Audience Member This is the true spiritual successor to Star Trek. Let's face it Star Trek is boring, you either need INSANELY good writing, or another element. The other element The Orville adds is comedy. Brilliant show.
