Critics Consensus
Despite a strong start, Sanditon's soapy drama quickly dissolves into nothing more than just another beautiful, melodramatic period piece.
Cady Lang TIME Magazine Based on Jane Austen’s final unfinished novel of the same name, Sanditon has all the author’s requisite traits: a plucky heroine, a bevy of handsome suitors, and plenty of Regency-era drama. May 20, 2024 Full Review Robyn Bahr The Hollywood Reporter Even in spite of Sanditon's many prosaic faults, I left the finale thinking, "Wow. They really went for it." Jan 13, 2020 Full Review Ann Donahue indieWire "Sanditon" is sexy escapism for winter, tart and political, gorgeous and honest. Austen would have loved it. Rated: A- Jan 11, 2020 Full Review Lynden Barber Limelight ...a more conventional production inspired by the dozen or so chapters of Austen's unfinished final novel of the same name - expanded freely for TV by - who else? - Davies. Jul 23, 2021 Full Review Diane Pershing Malibu Times This first season leaves us hanging and as long as Davies was fabricating a story line that did not exist, I'm am hoping there will be a season two. Jan 9, 2021 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz A delicious period drama filled with all the misunderstandings, scheming siblings, family fortunes, caddish gentlemen, confidences, conspiracies and "mean, miserly old monsters" the genre demands. Alexander T Slow, boring, with a lot of jarring cuts, while lacking the wit, charm, and clever dialog that Jane Austin is known for and offering little to catch your interest. Pretty disappointing. Maybe it gets better? But life is too short, and there are too many better shows, to continue slogging through this in hopes that this show picks up. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/27/25 Full Review Andrei D Starts off too slow and has a few too many characters but solid drama delivery Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/24/24 Full Review Carl R Great story. Theo James and other made this a enjoyable series. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/03/24 Full Review Stace D A very disappointing ending to this season. A complete waste of relationship building with the two main characters. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/04/24 Full Review Maureen P Loved this period piece. Dialog wonderful as well as costumes. Amazing actors. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/07/23 Full Review JAMES S Utter tripe. Makes "The Bold and the beautiful" look like genius. A complete waste of space.
