The Bad Batch's beautifully animated adventure may be too lore heavy for casual viewers, but fans will enjoy diving deeper into this dastardly cast of characters.
Wenlei Ma News.com.au The Bad Batch is catnip for the dedicated Star Wars fans. It's an animated action-adventure series with thrills, relatable characters on the right side of the war, blaster guns and enough lore and easter eggs to invoke a few excited squeals. Kevin P A solid epilogue series that helps bridge the gaps between Episodes III-IV, as well as Clone Wars and Rebels. The animation quality is gorgeous and feels almost live action with how detailed and colorful the environments are. The first episode is pretty awesome, with its feature-length run time and interesting scenarios presented as the base batch come to terms with the ramifications of Revenge of the Sith and the new emerging empire. Seeing Tarkin interact with and even question the Kaminoans is such a cool thing to watch as it truly integrates the two Star Wars trilogies/eras. Omega is a cute fun addition to the team and Crosshair's betrayal to stay with the empire over the bad batch is easily the most engaging aspect of the show. While it was cool to see Kanan lose his master Depa Bilaba from Order 66, I will admit it is a bit disappointing and even contradictory when compared to its comic counterpart. The second episode was a good follow-up with revisiting clone Deserter Cut. Omega's excitement as she experienced her first off World planet and soil for the first time was cute. Her decision to stay in danger by sticking with the Bad Batch instead of Cut was a bit questionable and forced, but I can look over it. I do love how this show explores the immediate aftermath of Revenge of the Sith, how the republic is slowly turning into the Empire, and how it has affected the various characters from Clone Wars we all know and love. The third episode is ok with the moon stranding plot, but shines with the human recruit subplot, with the precursor Stormtroopers butting heads with the clonetroopers and sparking a slowly emerging power struggle between Kamino/clones and imperial officers/human recruits that's really interesting to watch unfold. Crosshair's cold-blooded kill of his own defiant trooper and subsequently the civilians Prisoners was pretty dark for this show. Episode 4 w a s pretty fun seeing Fennec Shand from the Mandalorian in animation and interacting with the CW era crew. Episode 5 was decent. It was interesting to see how Zygerian Slavers were starting to thrive again in the empire despite their previous ties to the Separatists. The baby rancor and Bib Fortuna were fun cameos. Sid is an OK character so far (the voice and nickname one-liners are a bit grating though). Episode 6 is decent, with an improvement from the Martez sisters (even if Rafa is only there to complain and be a pain is the ass with a raspy smoker's voice). It's nice to see the battle droids reawaken and even fight alongside the clones in a post-clone wars setting and it's pretty funny. Episode 7 is a nice return for Captain Rex. But while it's nice seeing him catch up with the Bad Batch and team uo against the empire, it's frustrating that he doesn't have more emotional moments with Echo, his own freaking War comrade. Wrecker's inhibitor chip going off was intimidating, albeit a bit too quickly resolved. The mid-season finale was very exciting with Crosshair's infiltration cornering the bad batch and forcing them to get creative as they've ever been with their escape routines. Then the GOAT Cad Bane makes a long-awaited return go swipe Omega away from them. It's so cool to see Cad Bane in such high animation quality and he poses a real threat to the crew while posing an interesting dynamic between the different Kaminoans butting heads with the empire and even each other over the fate of Omega. The banter with Seth Green's T-BO droid was pretty funny and Cad Bane throwing hands with Fennec Shand over Omega after the death of Taun We was pretty awesome (even if Cad Bane arguably should've won the match, though to be fair, a misty closed quarters environment is arguably his least advantageous environment). These 2 episodes definitely raised the stakes of the show and was a good pace changer from the previous few filler episodes. The Common Ground episode was an interesting sad look at the fate of Raxus the separatist capital and its former leaders refusing to be Puppet leaders for the empire. The White protocol droid was pretty funny and it was interesting watching former enemies like the clones and separatists now working together to fight the empire. The Ryloth episodes flow a similar worldbuilding suit with Ryloth transitioning into its new colonial place with the empire as Orn Free Ta and Cham Syndulla are at odds with each other over their ties to the empire (further complicated by their allies' different viewpoints, from Hera & her uncle to Captain howler and Admiral rampart). The fake assassination attempt of Orn Fre Ta was another dark touch for this show that gave more stakes to the plot. Hera's new friendship with Omega were charming to watch. The Infested episode was a decent crime espionage mission with some classic space bug shout-outs and some nuance with the antagonist and his pet at the end. The War-Mantle was a pretty cool episode exploring the first generation of conscripted Stormtroopers (first called "TK Troopers") being trained by Clone Commandos to ironically replace them. It was nice to see Clone Commando Gregor again and the stakes felt pretty high, with Hunter even getting captured by Crosshair by the end. I like how the TK Trooper design is heavily inspired by Ralph McQuarie's first sketches of Stormtroopers; both being predecessors to the iconic armor we know and love. The background detail is so crisp in this episode, it practically looks live-action. And it's a great way to highlight how Lama Si was right over Tarkin in the Clones' superiority to Stormtroopers despite their endless supply in numbers. The 2-part season finale is pretty exciting with the destruction of Kamino and its assets stolen for the empire so they can have personal control over their cloning technology while cutting out the Kaminoan middleman. The final confrontation with Crosshair and the Bad Batch was well-done and their escape from the sunken city was tense. It's sad to say goodbye to such long stay location like the Kamino Cloning Facility, a location we've grown attached to since the Clone Wars & Attack of the Clones, be destroyed and is now gone forever. Though I'm glad that EZ and Nala Se survived (with some potentially interesting connections to the Mandalorian if her scientific skills are to be used by the Empire for the reasons I think they'll be used for). The final truce between Crosshair and the Bad Batch was nice, but realistic with it being a temporary truce and survival partnership rather than a complete repair of their relationship. It ends on a good note and is making me look forward to Season 2. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Jay W "Star Wars: The Bad Batch" is a Disney+ animated show that follows after the events of "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" but before the events of "Star Wars: Rebels". The series follows the exploits of a batch of clones that were missing an inhibitor chip and thusly, refused to betray the Jedi when Order 66 was declared. Despite not being a big fan of what Disney has done with the Star Wars Franchise, I have enjoyed the Dave Filoni helmed TV Shows. The man has a very solid track record, including helping on "Mandalorian", "Star Wars: Clone Wars" and even directing episodes of "Avatar: The Last Airbender". And where this isn't Filoni's best work, it is still an above average TV show. I think where the Star Wars sequels failed is that they were trying to make films that were everything to everyone. They wanted movies that would appeal to the lowest common denominator. "Bad Batch" doesn't have that problem. It understands that this isn't going to appeal to everyone and their OK with that. I don't think the show takes as many risks or is as groundbreaking as "Clone Wars", but if you liked that show, you should like this one as well. The show is smaller in scale compared to "Clone Wars", given its place in the timeline, there aren't many Jedi. Instead the story focuses on the titular batch and the different missions they take on. All of this while trying to avoid capture by the empire. It's good fun stuff. Not top-tier Star Wars, but still not a bad batch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Caislyn K A great continuation of The Clone Wars. The storyline provides yet another facet of the Empire, the clones, and war itself. The animation is a testament to the advancements and improvement in the animation division. This first season does well in establishing this new storyline with its characters while having that nostalgia from The Clone Wars show. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/28/24 Full Review AK K I loved the first season just as much as the 3rd and final season. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/06/24 Full Review Rodney R While not the strongest start to animated star wars show, and characters not being as likable as other shows, still a good show overall. Would recommend watching all seasons. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/25/24 Full Review Read all reviews
