Critics Consensus
Starstruck doesn't rewrite the rom-com datebook, but with a quick wit and a star-making turn from the dynamic Rose Matafeo it's easy to fall for anyway.
Judy Berman TIME Magazine It’s a premise straight out of fanfiction, but creator and star Rose Matafeo steers it confidently, and entertainingly, out of the realm of fantasy... Feb 13, 2023 Full Review Wenlei Ma News.com.au Kiwi comedian Rose Matafeo has infused the six-part rom-com she created, co-wrote and stars in with a witty sense of humour and a freshness, as well as a clear, deep love for the genre. Jun 26, 2021 Full Review Kylie Northover The Age (Australia) This unashamedly sweet romcom -- stay with me -- is such a delight that even those who find the genre outdated and saccharine will find it hard to dislike. Rated: 4/5 Jun 24, 2021 Full Review Jennifer Bisset CNET Watch out for scene-stealer Minnie Driver as Tom's agent in this witty, neatly crafted comedy package. Mar 30, 2023 Full Review Sarah Ward Concrete Playground Takes Notting Hill's premise, gives it a 22-years-later update and delivers a smart, sidesplittingly funny and all-round charming rom-com. Jun 25, 2022 Full Review Sabrina Barr metro.co.uk Rose Matafeo hits the bullseye once again with ra ib-tickling, heartfelt BBC Three rom-com. Feb 7, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews
Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Koo K What a refreshing series to the rom-com genre. Throroughly enjoyed it! I love both actors in the leading roles. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/25/23 Full Review Susan J Seemed to be of a particular 30-somethings genre or trying-too-hard-to-be-energetic/manic/funny/quirky, and I'm left exhausted, without having laughed and not being into the "cringe factor" of characters who don't resonate with me at all. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/05/23 Full Review Audience Member Rose Matafeo is brilliant. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review ma'ark t Starstruck stands out in today's market as a good rom-com. It is getting harder to find - quality viewing in this genre these days. I like that the humour works at different levels - subtle, cringe, over the top, dry etc... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Loved it. Rose and Nikesh have great easy chemistry on set and nothing ever felt too cringey or stressful when watching like some rom-com drama type things do. Very funny and a great selection of characters.
