The Haunting of Hill House is an effective ghost story whose steadily mounting anticipation is just as satisfying as its chilling payoff.

Annette B This was the second time I’ve watched this series and there is nothing about it that I don’t love. The storytelling was simply perfect. The emotions—heartache, anger, pain, love, longing, fear—it was all so well written and performed. On a more technical note—I loved that for a horror, the lighting was so well managed and the cinematography was absolutely excellent. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Richard U Absolutely a must see series if you are a fan of The Mike Flanagan-verse of horror! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/02/25 Full Review James O The Haunting of Hill House is a masterpiece of modern storytelling, seamlessly blending heart-stopping horror with profound emotional depth. Mike Flanagan's adaptation of Shirley Jackson's classic novel is nothing short of exceptional, delivering a deeply moving exploration of grief, trauma, and family bonds alongside some of the most chilling moments ever seen in a horror series. What sets Hill House apart is its ability to balance terror with tenderness. Each member of the Crain family is richly developed, their individual struggles woven into a narrative that is as heartbreaking as it is horrifying. The performances are stellar across the board, with standout turns from Victoria Pedretti, Carla Gugino, and Henry Thomas. Flanagan’s direction is masterful. The series is packed with technical brilliance, from its breathtaking single-take episode "Two Storms" to its subtle use of background ghosts that reward eagle-eyed viewers. The atmosphere is thick with dread, but it’s the emotional resonance that lingers long after the final credits roll. The scares are effective, but they’re never cheap—every haunting moment serves the story, enhancing its themes of loss, guilt, and the inescapable grip of the past. At its core, The Haunting of Hill House isn’t just a horror story; it’s a deeply human one, and that’s what makes it unforgettable. Verdict: A perfect 5/5. The Haunting of Hill House is a must-watch for anyone who appreciates horror with heart, and it stands as one of the finest series of the genre, if not of all time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/02/25 Full Review Himanshu A A Riveting Blend of Horror and Heart – The Haunting of Hill House The Haunting of Hill House is a masterfully crafted series that combines psychological depth with atmospheric horror. The show delves into the Crain family's traumatic past, weaving a compelling narrative that balances emotional storytelling with spine-chilling moments. The exceptional performances, especially from Victoria Pedretti and Carla Gugino, add depth to the complex characters. Visually striking and deeply unsettling, this series is both a haunting exploration of grief and a standout in modern horror. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/31/24 Full Review Surasha S Brilliant series. I love the different POVs so that it's not told from just a single perspective. My gosh did the last episode make me cry. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/30/24 Full Review Carlos H I got to know Mike Flanagan's work, first, through the "Midnight Mass" series, which made me extremely positively impacted with its script, direction, photography, cast and history. That series was so good that I can't wait to see her again! I had heard very well about "The Haunting of Hill House", but for some reason (perhaps my lack of time to follow series), I could only finally watch it in 2024, and immediately understood all the compliments and positive criticism I've heard so far. The way Mike mastery the story and how it makes us cling to the characters is worthy of applause. You care about the characters, and I definitely suffered from them all, especially during the last episodes, where we finally discovered what led Olivia Crain, the family matriarch, to the terrible fate that reaped her life and influenced her children's adult life . The child cast is amazing, and the adult, as competent as. I would like to highlight the work of Katie Parker, who gives life to Poppy Hill, the clinically insane wife of William Hill: she has an amazing presence on screen, and is incredibly beautiful and talented, literally embracing the madness of that ghost who, attached to Hill residence, and clearly one of the key pieces in the evil plane of the house, leads Olivia Cain to the decline. After the house, it is correct to say that Poppy Hill is the main antagonist of the series, and Katie Parker does an exceptional job when interpreting her! I also liked how adult actors look like their child interpreters, and I loved to review Henry Thomas, because he's an excellent actor (and E.T. is one of my favorite movies of life!). The structure of the series is exquisite, with the first episodes to be devoted to each of the main characters, which makes the bond with the viewer consolidated. The atmosphere is distressing and in recent episodes we have catharsis, with ghosts, madness and family tragedy. It is difficult to compare Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Hill House, because its themes are distinct, but I would say that The Haunting of Hill House has managed to overcome it and became my favorite life series. There are many layers and teachings to be extracted from the series, and each dialogue connects with a point presented. The Haunting of Hill House is a Netflix masterpiece, and I can't wait to review it soon! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/23/24 Full Review Read all reviews
