Critics Consensus
It may not yet be the One Show to Rule Them All, but The Rings of Power enchants with its opulent presentation and deeply-felt rendering of Middle Earth.
Alan French Sunshine State Cineplex While there are moments when The Rings of Power loses some of its steam, the vital setup for the series’ future becomes a necessary evil. At the same time, plenty of moments appeal to the spectacle in Tolkien’s vision. Rated: 8/10 Aug 27, 2024 Full Review Gautam Sunder The Hindu Though having a little too much exposition, showrunners John D. Payne and Patrick McKay pull out all the stops in this new Tolkienian saga, armed with some spectacular visuals and arresting performances. Jul 18, 2024 Full Review Joonatan Itkonen Toisto.net There are the beginnings of a great show here. If only, like the heroes in the epic story it tells, the series can shoulder the burdens a little while longer. Rated: 4/5 Jul 8, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews
Martina H Rarely has a series annoyed me as much as “Rings of Power”. It tramples on what Peter Jackson created in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy just as much as J. R. R. Tolkien's great masterpiece. And the fact that so much money was wasted on it is unbelievable. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/11/25 Full Review Imanuel R. G Me dio mucha risa. Parecía una parodia la mayoría de veces. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/25 Full Review giles h I wish I could give a rating less than zero, Tolkien's works are some of the greatest fictional literature ever created, practically a mythology. Rings of power season one could not be more insulting or damaging to the imagined world. Anyone who would really enjoy and appreciate Tolkien's work but has yet to read it, would unfortunately be put off Tolkien's work by this show, and anyone who loves this show would be either not find what they're looking for in actual Tolkien or discover something far greater than they could have hoped upon reading the books. This show would even be an insult to fan fiction, the writing almost seems to be deliberately the opposite of everything Tolkien tried to do with his work. It's so perfectly opposite of anything Tolkien that it's hard to believe it wasn't written by people who truly hated his works, because they had to have spent a long time reading his works to ensure they went the opposite direction so perfectly, and that's a commited level of hatred for the literature. Why these writers were chosen is beyond anyone's understanding, they clearly wanted to write their own fiction, were incapable of doing so and attracting an audience, so used Tolkien's IP to force their junk down our throats. There's literal quotes where they said they can write better and do what Tolkien couldn't. This series should have been a slam dunk, it takes a special kind of awful to lose 2/3 of your audience before you even finish the season Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/25 Full Review Dominic T What a load of junk, I could only watch 4 episodes of season 1. Forget this show. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/27/25 Full Review Susannah Z I haven’t read the book. I really tried. I had a broken foot and swore I would, but it’s difficult. That being said I loved The Rings of Power. I couldn’t sleep because I binged. I think the movies are some of the best movies in the world and I had a blast seeing what happened before in the show. Also knowing the budget and taking note of the costumes, make up and especially the visual effects just blew my mind. With all the dark drama’s about people and their problems or twisted and dysfunctional relationships It’s so refreshing to see a true STORY to escape from this world and go to another. Highly recommend! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/25 Full Review Aegon T Worst show ever! Amazon ruined the LOTR brand. Two idiot writers destroyed everything.
