Critics Consensus
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has seemingly run out of fresh material, but it continues to reward fans with expert delivery and snappy presentation.
James Jackson Times (UK) It’s still the fastest-talking show around. Jul 8, 2022 Full Review John Doyle Globe and Mail The visual opulence remains stunning and Midge wears clothes to die for. That’s still part of the draw. But there is now a feeling that the series is treading water. Feb 25, 2022 Full Review Alexandra Pollard Independent (UK) I continue to admire the show, for its pastel dresses, its blue language, and its bite. Rated: 3/5 Feb 19, 2022 Full Review Alexandra MacAaron Women's Voices for Change Mrs. Maisel may be back where she started — not just in her old club, but in her old apartment, and even (mini-spoiler here) back in jail. But this time, she’s taking no prisoners. It’s awfully good to have her back. Rated: 9/10 Aug 24, 2022 Full Review Susan Granger SSG Syndicate The screwball comedic delight continues into the tumultuous decade of the 1960s as the pioneer stand-up comic battles her own self-sabotaging demons. Rated: 8/10 Apr 24, 2022 Full Review Dustin Rowles Pajiba The audience for the series may have moved on, but in its fourth season, Mrs. Maisel is as good as it’s ever been. Lisa W Why did the writers feel like quick and well-delivered comedy wasn't enough? Why so much extreme profanity? The first three seasons were brilliant, both in storyline and comedic delivery. The funeral scene was cringe, and again disrespectfully littered with profanity. Barging in was enough. If that were my mother's service and you spoke those words, all hell would have broken loose. Hopefully season 4 will demonstrate TMMM's original brilliance. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/28/23 Full Review Ross D Show has made the descent from campy period fun to flat out Annoying. I'm no prude but it makes me wonder if the rising f-bomb count is a lazy and pathetic attempt to retain edginess. It doesn't work...nd it's not representative of the 50s. What it got right early on is the loving, loving, loud, neurotic and raucous life of the NY Jewish family. Now that's laugh ou loud funny. Bravo Tony Shalhoub and other family members. A well-placed expletive can be funny but vulgarity for vulgarity sake is not. It's just cheap and unimaginative Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/29/23 Full Review Roy V You would think the slapstick would get boring at some point but amazingly it doesn't. Susie Myerson is truly the glue to the whole thing! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/06/23 Full Review Mike P The charm of the innovative characters and their story are gone - replaced by overblown versions of their former selves taken to wacky extremes. Most early episodes of the season were a chore to try to get through. Keep trying in vain hope that the magic would reappear. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/01/23 Full Review Corey W It meanders a bit for the first few episodes, but once it finds its purpose season 4 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is just as sharp and glowing as ever. Midge's path to become a household name in comedy has run aground after the Shy Baldwin debacle and the step backwards is a little frustrating. Realistic? Sure, but it's hard to stomach after 3 seasons. It's certainly not enough to quit on her, but it highlights fears that the show could end when Midge gets her big break instead of allowing us to live in it for a while first. The character work is, as always, where the show really shines. Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein have never been better, using each other's talents to propel each actor to another Emmy nomination. The cast surrounding this central relationship is just as good and helps sell the package. Scenes featuring Michael Zegen or Tony Shalhoub are fun for different reasons than Midge and Susie, but the commitment on the part of the actors and the realized characters they're playing ensure that every B-story is as engaging as the main foray. Outside of perhaps HBO's Perry Mason, Maisel continues to be the best looking show on television with its floor-to-ceiling time capsule of the early 1960s in a way that makes one reminisce about Mad Men and the era in general. The writing is still top tier and the snappy deliveries ensure that viewers will be as delighted as ever, even if the season starts in a sort of arrested development. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member After a bit disappointing seasons 2 and 3 they got their footing back in Season 4 with the fabulous ensemble, sets, wardrobe and story lines. Suggest using subtitles for some of the fast dialog. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
