Critics Consensus
The New Look benefits from impressive production values and a talented cast, even if they're often let down by a somewhat scattered story.
Kelechi Ehenulo Empire Magazine Mendelsohn and Binoche keep this period drama watchable, but playing fast and loose with its historical premise means the series comes apart at the seams. Rated: 2/5 Feb 23, 2024 Full Review Amber Dowling Globe and Mail Like the fashions featured in the series, The New Look is meant to inspire viewers to think beyond the art and learn more about these people after the final credits roll. In that respect, it’s a success. Feb 21, 2024 Full Review Phillip Maciak The New Republic It would be easy to play Chanel as either a monster or a victim of circumstance. But Binoche is cagey and versatile enough to let her almost always be both. Feb 20, 2024 Full Review Diane Carson KDHX (St. Louis) Poetic license is taken, but confirmed biographical details are, nevertheless, significant. Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Abe Friedtanzer Cinema Daily US The New Look shows that it knows how to flesh out both characters and stories, giving a great deal of depth to household names whose fans surely don’t know the entirety of their identities and legacies. Rated: B+ Jul 27, 2024 Full Review Mel Campbell ScreenHub Shrewdly and sometimes damningly, The New Look illuminates our current fraught geopolitical climate … I did enjoy this series’s moral and political complexity. But if you’re looking for respectful biopic ‘authenticity’, take a new look elsewhere. Rated: 4/5 Jun 21, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews
Michele G Catherine Dior was an elegant woman and Maisie Williams is miscast. The other actors are good in their roles. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review Honey B I love Ben Mendelsohn and try to watch anything with him in it. This show would have been better in French. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/20/24 Full Review Tom F I cannot be made to care about fashion, but the show is fairly well done. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/26/24 Full Review Greig M I thought it was brilliant. Moving and entertaining. Malkovich’s accent is terrible but everyone else is fantastic. And sign up the actress who plays Catherine for the Bette Davis biopic immediately! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Luz V boring serie, want a good fashion serie, watch becoming karl lagerfeld, or balenciaga. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/08/24 Full Review Brenda S Set during "La Seconde Guerre mondiale" (The Second World War) and named after Christian Dior's revolutionary post-war haute couture fashion, The New Look series is a captivating portrayal of a pivotal era in history. The series is well-acted and written. I recognized Maisie Williams, who plays Catherine Dior, Christian Dior's sister. She previously portrayed Arya Stark in Game of Thrones, and I enjoyed seeing her in this role. Ben Mendelsohn, Juliette Binoche, and the entire cast were excellent. While some reviews mentioned difficulty following the story due to the flashbacks, I found them easy to follow and helpful for understanding the characters' experiences. I'm not sure why others struggled with this aspect. The series fascinatingly delves into the history of the haute couture industry in Paris during the Nazi occupation, portraying the bravery of the Resistance and the harsh realities of human survival during and after the war, capturing the true horrors of that time. I didn't realize that Catherine Dior fought against the Nazi occupation as part of the French Resistance. She was awarded the Croix de Guerre, the King's Medal for Courage, and the Legion of Honour for her bravery and sacrifice. I highly recommend The New Look series, which refers to Christian Dior's revolutionary post-war haute couture fashion. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/30/24 Full Review Read all reviews
