Critics Consensus
The Old Man is just as intrepid and spiky -- and derivative -- as younger action heroes, with Jeff Bridges lending invaluable gravitas to this bone-crunching thriller.
Dan Einav Financial Times The Old Man may at times be too slow to be truly gripping, but Bridges in particular keeps us transfixed. Rated: 4/5 Oct 3, 2022 Full Review James Jackson Times (UK) A curious series, apparently wanting to have its old cake and chew on it slowly: half the time it’s a downbeat portrait of encroaching senescence — of regret and depression — the rest of the time it’s a rallying cry not to underestimate the old guy. Rated: 4/5 Sep 28, 2022 Full Review Amanda Whiting Independent (UK) Ultimately, the particulars don’t matter as much as the personalities involved. The Old Man is a show about how far these men will go -- even near the end of their lives -- to save themselves. Rated: 4/5 Sep 28, 2022 Full Review Martin Carr Yahoo! Movies Not only does The Old Man possess two formidable performances in Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow, but it also delivers a Disney+ drama packed with genuine pathos. May 20, 2023 Full Review Jeff Simon Buffalo News Bridges, and quite possibly Bridges alone, will keep me going to the end weeks from now. Jan 23, 2023 Full Review Marcelo Stiletano La Nación (Argentina) The interplay of scarring ambition, greed, need, debt, and pain may not be original, but in The Old Man, this game acquires an unusual and unique resonance. Mr. Beans R A fantastic spy thriller, a great fast paced story with some great acting and interesting characters if season 2 wasn't such a let down I'd give it a 5 star review as things stand the ending ruins the beginning. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/21/24 Full Review Chris F I love the writing for this series. The dialog has a poetic quality in many cases. I love the way that the series interweaves the story of the parents with the story of the daughter. Mirroring the phrases from different perspective. But it also marries intense action and drama. Very intelligently done. My only critique is that I don't feel that the Zoe character was a good match. Partly casting, partly how the character was written. It just feels out of place to me. But John Lithgow's casting and performance is perfect. Also the tie back to the younger Jeff Bridges version and the older version from a casting perspective is really well done. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/13/24 Full Review kevin s In a world of lazy cliché ridden copy- cat content replying on fast pace & twists to keep you from turning off; 'The Old Man' is certainly unpredictable. In fact, I don't think it even knows what;s happening half of the time. 3.5 stars easily earned for respecting the audiences intelligence, allowing NOTHING to go flawlessly for any character, like it would in real life. REFRESHING. By season 2, the show could easily have been an unrelated individual franchise. But, it keeps pulling you in with deep twists that feel original, and being exceptionally well filmed & edited. Lithgow; a man that can do little wrong for me, is unfortunately poorly cast for my senses. His character feels lost & weak in a good few scenes, there's some soul missing on his part. Bridges is strong & convincing, despite his physical condition which can be a little hard to believe when wrestling to the death with soldiers & trained killers half his age. But a stellar performance throughout is convincing enough. SPOILER: Bad move 'dropping the dogs off'. They are stars of the show, bringing much needed dynamics among the old flesh dominating much of the screen time. And, watch out for the 'Darth Vader' twist around agent Adams. I did not see it coming... Not concluded this yet, but it's definitely worth a watch & more for the patient viewer, than thrill seekers Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/28/24 Full Review Williams B Honestly, I didn’t expect to enjoy this show since it’s not usually my genre. But to my surprise, I was drawn in by the unique angle—a retired agent whose past resurfaces in unexpected ways. In a genre often filled with clichés, this season avoids them brilliantly. Jeff delivers a masterful performance, and the rest of the cast is equally impressive. While a couple of moments felt a bit rushed toward the end, I was completely hooked and eagerly awaited the next season like a long-anticipated meeting. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review Peter N Slow, convoluted, so, soooo, convoluted I almost gave up on it but there was nothing else to watch on tv at the time! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/11/24 Full Review Debbra W JB and JL really add depth to this gripping action thriller! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/06/24 Full Review Read all reviews
