Critics Consensus

The Rig may not plumb its full potential thanks to too many crude clichés, but this supernatural eco-thriller has enough ambience and appealing performances to make for a solid binge.

Andrew Male Times (UK) Majestically engineered daftness — the best kind. Jan 31, 2023 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) This supernatural thriller about the trapped crew of a North Sea oil rig never quite escapes a boilerplate set-up and its familiar genre tropes Jan 12, 2023 Full Review Heather Hogan Autostraddle It feels kind of like a Doctor Who ship siege episode, on the water. And scarier! Because, well, you know what happens when you stare too long into the abyss. Jan 9, 2023 Full Review Sara Wallis Daily Mirror (UK) Utterly gripping. Jun 29, 2023 Full Review Martin Carr Yahoo! Movies Miles from civilisation and cloaked in fog, The Rig is propped up by an excellent ensemble cast. May 20, 2023 Full Review Luke Buckmaster Flicks (AU, NZ, UK) There’s a feeling that Macpherson, Strickland et al are delaying the inevitable: biding time and going through the motions, putting off the big reveal. joebros4043 j The actors especially the actress who plays Rose, Emily Hampshire, are so annoying. She whispers continually. Speak up lady plus the writers can't seem to write a decent story. Avoid this series it is a waste of time except to watch and make fun of. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/01/25 Full Review Cheryl F An amazing series but Emily Hamilton was not an asset ,, almost annoying? And why is she whispering? Very unfortunate as the rest of the crew is absolutely spot on Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/16/25 Full Review LISA V Wooden actors on cheap film sets in a story written to bore hapless viewers to death. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/25 Full Review Fred S Too many questions left unanswered with each episode. Was an exciting concept for a show but poorly executed. To many antagonist changes. Switching from one setting to the next. Stupid mistakes in the writing. Like when bremner shot rose and went for the lift to escape. In the previous episode they stopped then restarted the lift so he was able to make the escape. Why didn't they just do it again while he was on it, warm the people above do they could mount a plan. Each episode had situations like this that could be picked apart by even novice binge watchers.Just weak writing. Wasted a what I think great concept for a series with poor cliches, stupid writing. I will not watch a season three. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/25 Full Review Matthew S Started this series as it appeared to be interesting and since I particularly like oil rigs and the plot line. But quickly abandoned this series due to silly premise and terrible acting. I highly recommend this series be skipped and or avoided at all costs as I decided this series to be a complete waste of time and although I waited for this series to get better...it didn't. So I wasted my time, so you don't have to. The total score I will render for this series is going to be D-Minus Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Jason G I was really digging it as it was a very interesting premise was 4 stars for me before... *Spoiler* It fell apart for me on when Coake came over. Guy is commiting man slaughter left and right and not only do they not lock him up, the the OIM like hmm maybe I should listen to more of his ideas that are getting people killed.. The guy with anger issues the whole season flips out over smaller things, then when his friend is killed by Coake he doesn't go after Coake and instead blames himself? He just breaks things in his room!?! Based on his previous personality he would do more than that. Very frustrating to ruin such a good premise with these gaping plot holes. I have ideas that could have made the plot only semi unbelievable not damn I have to stop watching now becuase its so unbelievable..But I am not writting a book here. Writers need somebody to discuss these things with them though becuase more than one show recently has been ruined by plotholes that could have eaily been filled with a flashback or small change in the scene...
