Audience Member Having read the book first, this was't too off from the book. The LDS detective added to the nuance and the native pautie helped the story. The book is better, but that's the usual, read then watch IMO> Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/29/24 Full Review J C Maybe if this was a movie it would have been better but as it stands, it's a long drawn out story without all that much going on in the way of mystery or intrigue. Most of the drama felt contrived and the dialogue was unbearably stilted. I'm not surprised critics liked it because they praise anything that attacks any religion, but the audience scores surprise me. If you watch this, try set aside any biases (positive or negative) you might have to the subject matter and be honest in saying if this is actually an intriguing story told in a compelling way. If you're being honest, I'm pretty sure you'll have no choice but to say it falls flat in most regards Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/16/24 Full Review hildegard m I found the acting of the detective quite profound, the conflict of religion & his duties. Have never researched the Mormon faith & only had a basic knowledge, but it really doesn't differ much from other religions. I am catholic & look back on its history of the Inquisition, the Crusades, etc., so pulled myself short when I immediately mentally criticised the Mormons. Initially I wasn't too interested by the title, but man was I wrong. It's not just a mystery and it's not just a drama...Banner of Heaven really does a tremendous job pouring on the suspense in a measured way, keeping characters developing and pacing the story in a perfect way. It also gives you a very intriguing look behind the history of mormonism, which ties into the central plot in an unexpected way. Absolutely, 100% can't miss.
