Nelson Mandela Voting Line Sculpture in Eastern Cape (original) (raw)

A 38 metre-long metal silhouette sculpture of a string of people of all shapes and sizes connected together - forms a work of art known simply as Voting Line. At the end of the queue, close to a group of children, and separate from the line waiting to vote, is a metal cut-out of Nelson Mandela with his fist in the air in a display of victory.

Did you know? The sculpture stands at the drum of the Great Flag at the Donkin Reserve.

The work of art stands in the Donkin Reserve in Port Elizabeth, one of several in the reserve that make up Route 67 - 67 works of art that celebrate the 67 years of public life Nelson Mandela contributed to the freedom struggle in South Africa, launched on Heritage Day in 2011.

The Voting Line is a series of laser-cut steel figures representing all of those who participated in the peaceful April 1994 voting process. The work conveys a sense of playfulness and optimism, helped by the addition of a couple of black metal seagulls that hover just above the heads of the voters.

Anthony Harris was commissioned to produce the life-size, 36.6 metre, 14 ton sculpture of 48 characters by the Madiba Bay Development Agency. Konrad Geel was brought on board to help complete the work.

The Nelson Mandela figure is the logo for the Nelson Mandela Foundation's Madiba Trust, who gave permission for it to feature in the Voting Line.

The best way to see the art work is to do a walk-about at the Donkin Reserve, taking in the Donkin Memorial, opposite the lighthouse, and other new works of art spread about the park.
