Rembrandt Park, Johannesburg

Lying in the curve of the N3 between the Buccleuch interchange and Bedfordview, Rembrandt Park's closest landmark is Modderfontein Road, which links the suburb with the Modderfontein golf course.

Rembrandt Park lies in the heart of the south eastern suburbs of Johannesburg, neighbour to Boksburg, Sandringham, Lyndhurst and Corlett Gardens. What makes Rembrandt Park so popular is its accessibility, despite being south of the city of gold. It is only 10 kilometres from the business mecca of Sandton, and close enough to Johannesburg International Airport to make it a popular overnight venue. And if you are only in the city on a fleeting visit the suburb is ideally close enough to Alex (Alexandra) to take advantage of a quick township tour (whilst Alex is not as popular as Soweto, it still holds a number of attractions.

The UN recently rewarded the Alexandra Renewal Project with a Scroll of Honour for its work building houses and upgrading infrastructures in the township. The huge suburb, which has a population of roughly 470 000 people, has a rich history and attractions include the Pan Africa Shopping Mall and taxi rank, King's Cinema, Nelson Mandela Yard, where he lived whilst a lawyer in the 1940s, and the Roman Catholic church close to a number of lively shops and beer taverns.

Like most of the suburbs around here, Rembrandt Park a typical hotch potch of uninspired architecture dominated mostly by townhouse complex living, yet leafy with fairly large properties and wonderful views back across the city of Johannesburg. For lively nightlife entertainment, head into Sandton or to the villages of Orange Grove, Bramley or Greenside.
