Pumula (original) (raw)

Pumula, South Coast

Pumula is one of very few little seaside villages along this part of the popular Hibiscus coast that has managed to retain something of the wildness one expects from sub-tropical coast on the Indian Ocean.

Just south of Hibberdene, with only Woodgrange and Umzumbe inbetween, Pumula is roughly 20 kilometres north of Port Shepstone - a brief respite in amongst thick green vegetation and protected, sandy beach, which manages to retain a natural wild beauty.

Pumula's beach is, as a result, relatively crowd-free even during peak season and the beach remains unspoilt. It may not be a swimming beach, these are but minutes away, but it is renowned for its fishing, and paddling and sandcastle building remain firm favourites for families. Pumula Point is a good place for collecting water in buckets or splashing in the natural tidal pools that result amongst the rocks here, whilst the sandy beach stretches for miles up towards Umzumbe, where there is a monastery.

There is plenty to do around here too, if the allure of the beach, its beauty still intact, fails to hold you, or if the weather turns. Beautiful Oribi Gorge is not far from here and offers not only gorgeous panoramic views but a variety of walks and hikes that vary from a one-hour stroll to more intensive hikes through forest and up ancient rocks.

You don't have to walk anywhere if just staring out over the scenery whilst eating your picnic is more your thing. If remaining close to the coast there is also a crocodile farm, bird parks, the Wild Coast Casino and a number of golf courses in the area offer a good round of golf.
