In the heart of Durban just across the road from the Durban City Hall, in Monty Naicker Street (what used to be Pine Street), is a square in which stands an old vicarage and the 1909 St Paul's Church. The Gothic Revival Edwardian church is a rebuild after the original, which opened for service in 1853, burnt down in 1906.
Did you know? Durban has a healthy mix of different cultures and religions, and it is not unusual to find Muslim mosques alongside Christian churches, cathedrals, and Hindu temples.
The church has a wonderful wooden ceiling, beautifully crafted stained glass windows and a large nave. Much of the city's early history has been recorded on commemorative plaques within its walls.
Despite being in the heart of a busy city, time seems to stand still inside, and gently reading through the history, or sitting awhile, is one of the pleasures of the church.
The 6.5 km Durban Places of Worship Tour, designed by author Ashley, includes: St Thomas Anglican Church, Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Saint Anthony's Catholic Church, West Street Mosque (West Street is now Dr Pixley KaSeme Street), Emmanuel Cathedral, Juma Musjid Mosque, St Paul's church and the Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Ganesh.
