Rust De Winter, Waterberg

Situated on the border of Limpopo and Northern Gauteng in South Africa, Rust De Winter is predominantly a large Nature Reserve and Dam with a small residential area.

The reserve is approximately 80km north of Pretoria. The Rust de Winter Dam Nature Reserve attracts an abundance of vibrant birds. Hundreds of different species of magnificent birds can be seen here. It is a popular area which attracts bird enthusiasts from all over the country and a good place to find a range of the common thornveld and broadleaved woodland birds that occur around Pretoria.

The dam attracts large numbers of interesting waterbirds, especially in winter. Any explorer here should pack a picnic basket along with a pair of binoculars and spend at least a morning or full day visit. Around 400 species have been recorded at Rust de Winter Nature Reserve. Other wild life in the area can also be seen and enjoyed.

Of course, one should spend some time exploring the localities situated close by Rust de Winter. Farm stalls, coffee shops and cultural villages are always fun to experience and offer all sorts of foods, goodies and collectibles. Camping in allowed along the pristine shore where one can enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the area in full.

This spectacular area is a popular angling and 4x4 adventure destination. In fact, 4x4 enthusiasts travel from all over the country to attend the annual Rust de Winter Gymkhana held at the Jeep club grounds in Rust de Winter. This is one of the biggest off-road events in Southern Africa. It is a thrilling 3 day event with a whole host of activities including a treasure hunt, off road trial, concourse and the main event obviously being the gymkhana. The race is nail biting and always loads of fun!

Being predominantly a nature reserve, Rust De Winter affords one the superb opportunity to relax and unwind in exquisite and tranquil surrounds. The accommodation here is attractive and set in amongst the tranquility. Whether waking up to the sounds of birds singing or the annual revving of engines during the 4x4 Gymkhana event, Rust De Winter in Gauteng promises an unforgettable stay.
