Dasklip Pass in Porterville, Western Cape (original) (raw)

About Dasklip Pass

Near the town of Porterville you will find Dasklip Pass, famous for its launching pad for experienced hang-gliders.

Did you know? Local paragliding championships are held here, and the pass is thus usually busy, whatever the weather, for those who are here to jump or simply those who come to watch those prepared to jump.

Getting to the Dasklip Pass is fairly easy. It involves following the N7 to Piketberg and then turning right onto the R44 all the way to Porterville, 25 kilometres on. At the t-junction you have only to follow signs that take you to Dasklip Pass, a tarred path that takes one up above the town. It is some 90 minutes from Cape Town and only minutes from the town of Porterville.

The views from the crest of the Dasklip pass are beautiful. They look out over an incredible valley towards Piketberg. It's no wonder that people don't mind launching themselves off the crest of the hill over the patch work quilt of farms below. Today's hang gliding experience is reputed to be a lot safer and more reliable than a few years ago.

Nonetheless, there is a certain amount of risk involved in following a hobby that launches one off a mountain in a non-powered flight. Whilst a jump relies heavily on thermal winds, full force gales are anything but helpful.

The tarred pass of Dasklip winds quite a bit up the mountainside. It is just wide enough for two cars to pass, depending on how big the cars are you may find yourself hugging the lip of the road should a rather large truck and trailer be on its way down. And the fynbos up at the top, if you can take your eyes away from those willing to risk their necks, is always worthwhile.
