Klipspringer Pass in Beaufort West, Western Cape (original) (raw)
The Klipspringer Pass takes one up to one of the best view points in the Karoo National Park, which you'll find just outside the town of Beaufort West. It's an easy pass to drive, although there are several sharp corners, and it's tarred so the condition of the road is good � you'd be forgiven if your eyes occasionally strayed to the incredible sweeping views over the craggy Karoo landscape, and the Rooiwalle canyon.
Did you know? You can't walk or cycle the Klipspringer Pass as there are lions in the park.
This scenic highlight of the park is not difficult to find either, as it's an extension of the main road through the park, but you will, obviously, have to pay an entrance fee to drive it.
The klipspringer (translated from the Afrikaans to mean 'rock jumper') is a hardy little antelope that lives in rocky terrain with sparse vegetation common to this part of the Karoo. They're also known as Oreotragus oreotragus and are from the same broader family as common sheep, cattle and goats (they're smaller than goats, though, standing barely 60 cm tall, and weighing little more than 10-13 kg).
The enjoyable part of the slow drive (the speed limit throughout the park is 40 km/hour) is the various viewing spots along the pass (at these you can get out of your car) and you're likely to spot a fair amount of game from here too.
Best time to drive: all year round, although summer gets scorchingly hot and in winter the temperature can drop to below zero.
