Two Oceans Aquarium in V&A Waterfront, Cape Town (original) (raw)
Called the Two Oceans Aquarium because the vast Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet here, or almost here at the southern tip of the continent, the delightful underwater nature reserve is based at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, with over 3000 living sea animals, including sharks, fish, turtles, and penguins on display.
Did you know? Exhibits include The Oceans of Contrast; Indian Ocean gallery that is actually a collection of six exhibits showcasing life in the warmer ocean.
The Two Oceans Aquarium is without doubt one of the most exciting attractions in the city, particularly if you have children (there is a wonderful child play area in the basement set right up against the seal display where children and seals have fun alongside one another). Child-height window benches and a �touch pool� where they can touch and feels kelp, shells and anemones add to the appeal.
There is another similar feature for the Atlantic Ocean that includes translucent jellies and seahorses; the Sappi River Meander, which traces a typical Western Cape River�s journey from its mouth back along the freshwater reed bed, to its source upstream; the Kelp Forest Exhibit - a firm favourite with anyone and everyone; and the I&J Predator exhibit that includes ragged-tooth sharks, an assortment of rays, loggerhead turtle and other predatory fish.
You can scuba dive with the predators if you hold a Padi Open Water Certificate. The Two Oceans Aquarium is also busy with a variety of conservation and research programmes, including assisting injured and stranded sunfish, and a monthly coastal clean up, where staff spend their lunches picking up litter off Mouille Point beach.
