Falaza Wildlife Park, KwaZulu Natal (original) (raw)

Falaza, a privately owned game park offering an excellent wildlife experience and fine accommodation in Hluhluwe, protects the remnants of this once mighty sand forest which evolved over 150,000 years ago.

Did you know? Numerous species of wildlife have been reintroduced to Falaza, which borders onto the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

Falaza is aptly named after a war veteran of King Cetshwaya's Zulu Impi (1873-1883), who, over a century ago fought against the British forces at the famous battle of Isandlwana. His village, built on the fertile banks of the Mzinene river, was known by the early hunters as Dugandlovu - "the place where the elephants get lost".

For the bird watcher, Falaza offers an extraordinarily wide variety of birdlife, including rare species such as the Pink Throated Twinspat, the African Broadbill, Rudd's Appals and the beautiful Grey Waxbill.

In addition, the sand forest, a climax coastal forest surviving in a low rainfall area, boasts rare and unique trees, only found in this habitat. These include the Zulu Pod Berry, the rare Forest Fig and the characteristic Lebombo Wattle.

Antelope, including Nyala (the first specimen ever recorded was at False Bay), Eland, Waterbuck, Bushbuck, Reedbuck, Grey Duiker and the rare Suni may all be found in Falaza Game park.

In addition, Zebra, Wildebeest, giraffe, Warthog, Bushpig, Hyaena, Serval, Leopard, Blesbuck, Kudu, Hippo, Rhino and Impala are all found at Falaza.
