About Malelane Gate

Under an hour from Nelspruit, the Malelane Gate is one of the easiest ways into the Kruger National Park. It lies on the Crocodile River, some 50 km from Crocodile Bridge, just past the little town of Malelane in Mpumalanga.

Did you know? The convenience of the Malelane Gate is well recognised and as such it is one of the busiest gates at Kruger.

Driving across the Crocodile River into the park is semi-surreal � the artificial uniformity of farmland with accompanying electricity pylons behind you, the granite koppies of the Malelane Mountain Bushveld an indication of the wildness ahead. It is hard to believe that two such diverse landscapes can occur, divided only by a river.

The convenience of the Malelane Gate is well recognised and as such it is one of the busiest gates at Kruger. There are often queues and the extra time spent on the road pressing on to Numbi Gate near Hazyview, or Crocodile Bridge just 50 km further along the N4, is sometimes worth the effort.

Three kilometres from the gate is Malelane camp, on the banks of the Crocodile River. Not as popular as other camps, mainly because the sugar cane fields of the farms near Malelane are in full sight, it is the only camp right on the boundary of the park and thus rather convenient for late arrivals. It is also very small if you are after a less busy or noisy bush experience. No day visitors are allowed in the camp and there are early morning and evening game drives, as well as guided walks.

From Malelane Gate you have a number of drive options open to you

� Matjulu Loop, or the S110 - a broad loop along the Malelane/Berg-en-Dal main road around the Berg-en-Dal dam and camp.

� Main road to Skukuza, or the H3

� Crocodile River Road, or the S114/S25

Game you're most likely to see here are browsers � giraffe, kudu, duiker � but despite the heavy vegetation, the Big 5 have all been spotted here.
