Touchstone Game Farm, a natural heritage site, lies in the north western section of the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, a privately owned nature conservancy of some 100 000 hectares dedicated to preserving and protecting the delicate ecosystem and preserving the natural heritage of the area.
Did you know? Only three hours' drive from Johannesburg, this part of South Africa nonetheless responds to an entirely different drum beat - the rhythm of the African bushveld.
This is malaria-free Big 5 country and Touchstone is no exception, providing visitors with access to lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo. Touchstone also happens to be home to the world's only herd of black impala and 90 species of game roam through this part of the Waterberg Mountain region.
The Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, which lies in the north of the Limpopo, is one of four UNESCO identified reserves in the country. It is also the first region in the northern part of South Africa to be named a biosphere reserve.
It is the only 'savanna' reserve of this type in southern Africa, and the incredible rock formation has been shaped by hundreds of millions of years of riverine erosion. Archaeological finds here date back to the Stone Age.
Convenient for people from Gauteng and visitors to the region, trips to this part of the Waterberg (water mountains) is an easy getaway. For this reason, the Waterberg is being 'rediscovered', not only for its wildlife but also because there is no malaria.
The Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, of which Touchstone is part, lies in the heart of the Waterberg providing a broad sweep of incredible mountainous beauty, access to game and a strong emphasis on conservation.
