Leeuwkop Golf Club in Sunninghill, Johannesburg (original) (raw)

Amidst Johannesburg suburbs like Woodmead, Rivonia and Lone Hill is the residential and commercial suburb of Sunninghill. This area is abuzz with businesses, residents and tourists. But, in the heart of it, are the peaceful rolling fairways of the Leeuwkop Golf Club. This was the brainchild and vision of Lt-General van Zyl of the Department of Correctional Services, who wanted to construct a golf course for the department.

Today, Leeuwkop continues to serve the department as well as other golfing enthusiasts and visitors, thanks to its affordability and accessibility. It is closed on Mondays and visitors are welcome to the course every day except Saturday and Sunday mornings. Tee times are also welcome.

Visitors will be please to know that play here is open to the public. However, it is highly recommended that you book your hotel or accommodation in Sandton and your tee-off times ahead to avoid disappointment.

The putting green and practice facility is a great addition to the course as they allow players to test themselves and up their confidence off the fairways. There is also a halfway house, with a bar and restaurant, where friends and colleagues can meet, relax and discuss their game.

There are big-screen televisions on which sports can be enjoyed, and a spacious veranda with pretty views of the course. Golf carts and clubs for hire complement the in-house pro shop to ensure that players have an all-round golfing experience. In addition, there is a lapa area and function room for corporate events and special celebrations.
