Hankey Sundial in Hankey, Eastern Cape (original) (raw)
About Hankey Sundial
Nestled deep within the picturesque Gamtoos Valley in the Eastern Cape are three small towns - Loerie, Patensie and Hankey. Hankey is the oldest of these three, having been established in 1826. The surrounding landscape is characterised by beautiful, green hills and farmlands, which make this quiet little retreat even more alluring.
Hankey is also home to the largest sundial in Southern Africa and the Southern Hemisphere (and, quite possibly, the continent). The Hankey sundial was erected in 1989 at the entrance of the town, right below the Vergaderingskop Mountain.
It has an impressive diameter of 34.6 metres with a gnomon (the pole that casts the shadow) of 18 metres. It weighs a hefty one ton.
Please Note
Sadly, as of 2024, this unique landmark has been neglected and no longer looks like it does in the photographs. We have appealed to the municipality to clear the vegetation and clean up the site.
