Baviaanskloof Hartland 6-day Hike in Gamtoos Valley, Eastern Cape (original) (raw)

Start: Rietrivier
Finish: Rietrivier
Duration: roughly 12 km a day
Fitness: you need to be fit to cope with steep sections, rock surface and rough terrain
Our tip: this is a slackpack trail, but you will need to provide your own lunch and drinks every day

Where else do you get to ride on a donkey-cart, learn about bee farming, olive farming and leopard rehabilitation whilst hiking through one of the most isolated and beautiful parts of the country?

The Baviaanskloof Hartland lies between the Baviaanskloof and the Kouga Mountains a particularly unique portion of the Baviaansklook, enclosed by the Baviaanskloof Nature Reserve, but inhabited and farmed.

The hike incorporates sections of the tarred road, trails over farmland and Parks Board property. Each day of the hike is accompanied by a local guide who knows something of the surrounding beauty of the Baviaanskloof.

You will hike from the Smitskraal Wilderness Area, through to the Nuwekloof Pass via the Sandvlakte, Doornkloof, Kleinpoort, Kamerkloof, Studtis Poort, Bo-Kloof and the Groot Kloof.

In the evenings you are accommodated in a series of different guest houses where your breakfast and dinner is included in the package. One of the evenings involves sleeping in an open cave in the wild, so bring a sleeping bag.

The hike is a pre-organised package for which you book in advance and accommodates 12 to 14 people. Your backpack is transported from destination to destination for you.
