Gallery Momo in Parktown, Gauteng (original) (raw)

Johannesburg is one of South Africas most significant urban hubs in terms of commerce, entertainment, tourism and government. But it also boasts loads of heritage and culture. The upmarket and historical suburb of Parktown is full of homes, restaurants, schools, and businesses. It is also the residential address of Gallery Momo.

Momo is a modern art gallery, with the intriguing juxtaposition of being located in an old family house that dates back to the early part of the 20th century. In 2003, it was revamped to house some of the finest contemporary art pieces in Gauteng ranging from ceramic sculptures to paintings and photographs.

The physical structure and architecture of the building plays an integral role in the overall experience. The outside of the building resembles an empty container, with endless possibilities regarding what these walls and rooms could possibly hold. The interior is open, spacious and light, with enormous windows that invite the sun in and showcase the art to perfection.

In addition to providing artists with a platform on which to exhibit their work, Gallery Momo also has a residency programme that enables local and international artists to collaborate and communicate; fuelling and feeding one anothers creativity.

Visitors to Johannesburg and Gauteng are invited to see the result of a complex culture and heritage, and to immerse themselves in the innovative creativity that is on display within this modern art-centric resource.
