Sable Ranch Hiking Trail in Hekpoort, Gauteng (original) (raw)

Gauteng is South Africas smallest but busiest province, in terms of commerce, retail and industry. With Johannesburg as its central hub, it is known for glitz, glamour and a fast pace. So, to escape the hubbub of the city, families are invited to explore the prettiness around the province when they tackle the Sable Ranch hiking trail in Krugersdorp.

This trail is open on weekends and public holidays, and showcases the countryside just outside Hekpoort, which lies on the slopes of the breath-taking Magaliesberg Mountains. The trail can be enjoyed at a slower pace, which makes it perfect for families with little ones or those that dont do tons of walking. But, pick up the pace and push your limits if you are after a worthwhile workout.

The trail is about eight kilometres long and, along its course, so many different kinds of plants and animals can be spotted and photographed. There are around 150 different kinds of birds and more than 650 different plant species here. Looking out for new and exciting fauna and flora will keep everyone enthralled.

There are a number of trail options, depending on the time you have available and your fitness level. The longest (and steepest) option is eight kilometres, but you could also opt to explore a shorter, easier one. However, the longer route leads to a scenic picnic spot, which makes the extra effort well worth it.

Sable Ranch has barbecue facilities on the mountain too; the perfect place to rest and drink in the fresh air and gorgeous landscapes of South Africa. From the top, you can choose to go down to the dam, which is surrounded by verdant vegetation, or you can head down Sable Road to the feeding centre for many of the animals, which is always a highlight.

Children love the Sable Ranch experience because they get to burn energy, explore the outdoors and spot many different animals. It is serene and inviting, and is less than an hours drive from the heart of Johannesburg.
