Sodwana Bay Beach in Sodwana Bay, KwaZulu Natal (original) (raw)

Very little compares to the magnificent beach that is Sodwana Bay Beach, which is idyllically perched on the Elephant Coast in KwaZulu-Natal. Whether you want to laze away the hours tanning on the warm sands, or you want to get your fair share of adventure and thrills, Sodwana Bay Beach is just what you need.

This long stretch of sandy beach promises plenty to see and do for locals and tourists alike. Visitors that need some serious time out can just enjoy the tranquillity and beauty surrounding them here. However, those wanting more are spoilt for choice. In addition to comfortable swimming and surfing conditions (thanks to the warm water), this is also a popular beach for kite-surfing, snorkelling, spear-fishing and body-boarding. The latest fad of hydrofoiling is another pastime that can be enjoyed here. Deep-sea charters are recommended for keen fishermen that want to feel the exhilaration of catching marline (blue, black or striped), sailfish, swordfish, tuna, or dorado.

But, what Sodwana Bay is best known for is its incredible SCUBA diving conditions. Clear water, rocky reef, and the colourful life that inhabits it make it extra special for qualified divers. Dive boats launch every day to take divers out to the outlying reefs, where the gorgeous coral and marine life enthral divers for hours.

Loggerhead and leatherback turtles nest on this sandy beach. Turtle tours are conducted from the end of November to the end of February, giving visitors the chance to see these seemingly-prehistoric animals trundle over the beach or lay their eggs.

The sand dunes and coastal forest at Sodwana Bay Beachare very beautiful. Explore them on foot on the trail, which extends for five kilometres and showcases some stunning vegetation and the bird life that calls this home.

Sodwana is almost 4.5 hours from Durban, and almost three hours from Richards Bay.
