Royal Thonga Safari Lodge is a highly recommended KwaZulu Natal game lodge providing a wildlife experience for discerning anyone visiting Elephant Coast.

Royal Thonga Safari Lodge is the realisation of a dream of the local community, investors and the Royal Tembe Development Foundation to create a natural paradise for visitors to this unique reserve.

The lodge is designed to emulate the local Tonga building style and each of the fourteen chalets are uniquely positioned to offer guests total privacy and luxurious comfort within a sand forest in Tembe Elephant Park.

Natural materials and timber give a warm organic ambience and invite the outdoors in - all rooms are appointed with quality furnishings and bathrooms come complete with an indoor and private outdoor shower for those whom enjoy immersing themselves in their surroundings.

What to expect at the lodge/reserve

Accommodation

The chalets are all individually situated and are partially hidden by the surrounding sand forest and overhanging thatched roofs. Interiors are cool and shady while the covered verandas provide respite from the African sun.

All rooms are furnished with single beds that can be converted into double beds on request, as well as mosquito nets. Fans ensure your cool comfort and tea and coffee facilities are provided. A desk and small seating area is available and a small lounge area is also provided. Guests can relax on their private decks and enjoy the bird life.

The privacy of the units also invites guests to enjoy their delightful outdoor showers and there are also indoor shower facilities.

The interiors are designed to offer guests uncluttered views of the forest, allowing nature into the chalets, for an intimate encounter with the landscape. Local materials and construction methods have been used to minimize the impact on the ecological processes of the environment.

Meals

The eHlatini restaurant focuses on creating innovative and delicious meals by combining traditional European style cuisine infused with a local twist. A fully stocked wine cellar offering fine South African wines is available. Join us for an unforgettable experience.

Activities & Attractions

Besides the estimated 250-odd elephants at Tembe, including some of Africa's biggest Tuskers, there is also a thriving population of lion, black and white rhino, leopard, African buffalo, wild dog and a host of antelope species including the secretive Suni, Africa's second smallest antelope.

This 30 000 ha �Big Five' reserve, set in an area of sand forests, pans and wetlands in northern Thongaland, falls within a area between tropical and sub-tropical forms and is home to a great diversity of vegetation.
