DESCRIPTION:
- Established in 2021, this service award is designated for a SAGES Community Practice Surgeon member who exemplifies excellence in Community Practice Surgery through their local and/or national work.
- A Community Practice Surgeon is one who provides care outside of “tenured” (or “tenure-tracked”) academic medicine. These individuals are trusted leaders of the healthcare team, who focus on the care of their community and include general surgeons and surgical subspecialists. They are located in rural through urban centers, working in hospitals of various sizes and capabilities.
- Examples of this work includes:
- hospital leadership
- innovation in community practice
- improvement in patient access to care, outreach and education
- commitment to teaching – community, colleagues, staff, patients, and/or trainees
- advocacy and health policy involvement
- Past winners include: Caitlin Halbert, MD (2022); Marian McDonald, MD (2023); Seung Gwon, MD (2024)
AWARD REQUIREMENTS AND BENEFITS:
- The award is available to current SAGES members.
- The winner will receive:
- Complimentary registration for SAGES 2025.
- Complimentary economy airfare to SAGES 2025 via our travel agent.
- 2 Complimentary nights in an official event hotel.
- An honorarium of $1000.
