Taste of Encinitas

This year’s Taste of Encinitas is from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, at 818 South Coast Highway 101. The event features tastes from more than 20 restaurants, along with wine and local craft beer served at more than 27 Sip Stops hosted by shops and salons. Gourd Show at community center

An exhibit of gourd artwork by local artist Grace Swanson runs through Sept. 4 at the Encinitas Community Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive. The exhibit features 10 works created by Swanson and 17 pieces from her collection of gourds from around the world, including gourd spoons, bowls and a musical instrument from Nigeria and Niger; Yerba Mate gourds from South America; and burned gourds from Peru. Ukrainian Festival

The House of Ukraine will put on a Ukrainian Festival with food, music and dance from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 1 at the House of Pacific Relations in Balboa Park. Traditional Ukrainian homemade food will be sold until 4 p.m., including potato and cheese varenyky with sour cream and fried onions, kovbasa sandwiches, salads and Ukrainian sweet treats along with watermelon and cold drinks. International Children’s Film Festival

The 20th San Diego International Children’s Film Festival is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at the Neil Morgan Auditorium at the San Diego Central Library downtown. The festival presents more than 30 short films and animations from across the world by filmmakers of all ages for an all-ages audience. 87th annual community Deep Pit Barbecue

Tijuana and Tecate Railroad summer exhibit

The Tijuana and Tecate Railroad summer exhibit continues through fall at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum, 1649 El Prado, in Balboa Park. The exhibit looks at the history and construction of the Tijuana and Tecate Railroad, the section of the San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railroad located across the U.S.-Mexico border. The exhibit walks visitors through the challenges John D. Spreckels faced when he funded the construction and the aftermath of the railroad in the Mexican cities the trains passed through. Bike The Bay

The 17th annual Bike The Bay event is Aug. 25 with 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. start times at Embarcadero Marina Park South. Participants can take a 25-mile fun ride over the San Diego-Coronado Bridge and around San Diego Bay along with an optional 8-mile gravel, off-road loop. There will be food, entertainment and a Coronado Brewing after-ride beer garden and expo with bike vendors and exhibitors. The event is a 3.3-mile open water swim from Coronado Island to the USS Midway Museum. Last year, more than 100 swimmers participated, including veterans from all branches of the Special Operations community, first responders and patriotic supporters. Free pet adoption at County animal shelters

San Diego County Animal Services is waiving adoption fees through Sept. 10 at its animal shelters in Bonita and Carlsbad as part of the nationwide Clear the Shelters campaign. Shelters have record numbers of pets, especially dogs, according to Animal Services. Several hundred animals are awaiting adoption, ranging from dogs and cats to tortoises, roosters and pigs. The campaign, which started 10 years ago, is sponsored by NBC 7 and Telemundo 20 San Diego. When picking a pet online to adopt, Animal Services recommends having a second and third choice in case the first choice is already adopted. Community members who can’t adopt a pet, are encouraged to consider fostering a pet. Walk-in hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday at both the South Shelter, 5821 Sweetwater Road in Bonita, or the North Shelter, 2481 Palomar Airport Road in Carlsbad. Taste of Oasis programs for seniors

San Diego Oasis holds its Taste of Oasis from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, at San Diego Oasis’ Rancho Bernardo and La Mesa sites. Community members can get a sampling of the nonprofit’s programs and activities aimed at older adults. Highlights include a sneak peek at classes scheduled for the upcoming season, fitness demonstrations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a chance to meet instructors, and vendor resources. Light refreshments will be offered. Lifelong Learning sessions, featuring instructor introductions and detailed class descriptions, will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. There will be drawings for 15,15, 15,25 and $50 credits toward classes. Pet photo contest benefits shelter

San Diego Humane Society’s 32nd annual photo fundraiser runs through Saturday, Aug. 31. Folks can submit photos and vote for their favorite pet photo. Winning pet photos will be featured in the San Diego Humane Society’s 2025 calendar and there are prizes. The fundraiser supports the nonprofit’s services, including sheltering animals, adoptions, investigations of animal cruelty and neglect, veterinary care, and rescue and rehabilitation of wildlife through its Project Wildlife program. A free swim day for Santee residents is on Saturday, Aug. 31, at the Santee Aquatic Center at the Cameron YMCA Activity Pool. Vista Rod Run

The 34th annual Vista Rod Run is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 1 on Main Street in downtown Vista. The event features more than 350 classic cars and trucks, and car owners compete to win one of 30 trophies. There will be music throughout the event, specialty auto vendors and downtown shopping, restaurants and breweries. Admission for spectators is free. Vista Vibes Mini Music Festival

The Vista Vibes Mini Music Festival is from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at Local Roots Kombucha Brewery, 1430 Vantage Court. The summer jam features live performances, including R&B/pop group We The Commas, national jazz saxophonist Tony Exum Jr., hip-hop artist Joe Dreamz, and DJ Craftmatic. Free waterpark admission for service members

The Wave waterpark offers free admission for active-duty military, firefighters and law enforcement personnel on Sept. 1 with a valid ID. Up to six of their dependents can get tickets for $10 each at the ticket booth. The waterpark is open from noon to 5 p.m. weekends through Sept. 8, except Labor Day, Sept. 2, when the waterpark will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The park is at 101 Wave Drive. Vista Leadership Academy starts

The Vista Leadership Academy, a free eight-week program that gives Vista residents and business owners a look at how the city runs, is from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays from Aug. 28 to Oct. 16 .The program includes a citywide bus tour and a chance to meet elected officials and learn about the decision-making processes, budgeting, and key issues in Vista.
